Whooping cough: symptoms in children and treatment

Does the kid longly and specifically cough and no antitussive medications relieve his condition? Perhaps the child is one of the most common childhood diseases whooping cough. About what this disease, how it is diagnosed, and what needs to be done to cure the baby, we will tell today in our article.

Whooping cough this is an acute infectious disease with airway damage and spasmodic coughing attacks.

Pathogen of the disease Pertussis stick, unstable to the external environment, causing decay of erythrocytes.

Sources of infection the sick person transmits the pertussis stick by airborne droplets with close and long enough contact. It is impossible to catch pertussis through the objects.

Most often pertussis are sick preschool children, especially in autumn and winter.

  • incubation period of 2-14 days,
  • initial or catarrhal period of 2-14 days,
  • period of convulsive cough from 1 month or more,
  • recovery 1-2 months.

After the pertussis enters the mucous membrane of the upper respiratory tract, during the life process it releases a toxin that has a negative effect on the respiratory, vascular, nervous and immune system of the baby. As a result of this influence, the fibers of the vagus nerve are damaged and the transmission of nerve impulses to the respiratory center is impaired. Violated calcium metabolism and blood supply to the central nervous system of the child, there is a tonic spasm of the respiratory muscles, there is a paroxysmal cough that it is important to recognize and refer to a doctor on time.

Therefore, if after a usual cold in your opinion a child's cough does not go away, but on the contrary, intensified, should be always see a doctor for the diagnosis of whooping cough.

Ekaterina Kovbasko, a pediatrician at the Dobrobut clinic, tells: A characteristic cough in whooping cough is formed not earlier than 3-4 weeks after the onset of the disease. For accurate verification of the diagnosis of pertussis, as, indeed, any other infectious disease, it is necessary to take the so-called paired sera, i.e. repeated antibody tests after 2-6 weeks to track the dynamics. Remember that any disease has its own specific developmental pattern, it also has a value whether the child is vaccinated. Considering all the above factors, if the cough does not last long, you should trust the doctor and together identify the cause of the cough.

Of course, an experienced pediatrician can diagnose whooping cough during the examination, but sometimes the picture of the disease is blurred, unclear, and in order to make the correct diagnosis it is necessary to conduct laboratory research.

Patients with pertussis under the age of 7 should be isolated from other children in the house if possible, if this is not possible, a prophylactic medication and a bacteriological examination of mucus from the pharynx are recommended for the doctor's prescription.

Specific prophylaxis of pertussis is ensured vaccination. In Ukraine, vaccination against pertussis is carried out from 3 months of life to 4 years three times with a minimum interval of 30 days. Revaccination is performed once at the age of 18 months (6-12 months after the third vaccination). If a child under the age of 4 has not received a revaccination with the DTP vaccine (pertussis, diphtheria, tetanus), then it is performed by ADS (without a pertussis component for children 4-6 years old) or ADS-m (with a reduced amount of antigens) for children older than 6- years. Opposing vaccines are divided into whole-cell DTP and acellular aACDS.
