Water for breastfeeding – give or not

Should I give the baby water during breastfeeding?

Grandmothers and friends of the nursing mother argue that the baby on breastfeeding should be doped with water. Only modern women usually follow the recommendations of pediatricians who do not advise giving extra drinking to children up to six months. So does a baby need water or can it really hurt? You will find the answers in this article.

For a newborn mother, milk is not just food, but the best drink. It not only contains all the nutrients needed by the crumb, but also consists of 87% water. Even breast milk has important properties necessary to maintain the normal digestion of a child, than it differs from simple drinking water.

  • Toddlers younger than 4 months of pediatricians allowed to dopayivat water or to supplement the mixture strictly in the presence of medical indications. Simply, at will, you can not do this, otherwise there is a risk of harming the baby’s health;
  • In summer heat or during a period of illness with a high body temperature, crumbs should be given more often. Children from 4 months to 6 months can already offer water in the cup, but do not force her to drink. For this age, a safe dose of water is not more than 60 ml per day.

So it is stipulated by nature that the baby receives breast milk almost immediately after birth. At the same time, the mother’s body after the birth is constantly adjusted to the needs of the baby.

Mother’s milk changes its composition depending on the age of the child, as well as in different situations. So, if the baby for some reason needs more fluid, it often begins to be applied to the chest and more often requires changing it.

As a result, a baby who is thirsty gets more front milk, and it is 88% water. Only it differs from ordinary water in that such a liquid does not wash away electrolytes from the body of the crumbs and keeps their optimal balance.

By the way, adults with dehydration are also recommended to drink not ordinary water, but a solution of glucose (grape sugar) and mineral salts necessary for normal body functioning. The front milk is just such a composition: it contains lactose (milk sugar) and a whole set of mineral salts. Therefore, it not only eliminates the deficiency of fluid in the body of the baby, but also replenishes the reserves of the necessary electrolytes.

Even the front and fatty back milk contain a lot of vitamins, enzymes, bioactive substances that stimulate the digestion of a young child. When it receives water or tea in addition to mother’s milk, the concentrations of all nutrients are reduced. Therefore, the stomach and intestines of crumbs are reduced protection against bacteria and the effects of enzyme deficiency.
