Is it possible to breastfeed my mother to drink beer and how does alcohol influence the feeding of a baby
The diet of a woman who plans to breastfeed a baby, undergoes significant changes. Some foodstuffs, including alcohol, are strictly forbidden. However, many young parents make an exception for weak alcoholic drinks, referring to the low content of ethyl alcohol and the prevailing opinion about their benefits in stimulating lactation. Is it possible to drink beer of a nursing mother, without harming the health of the baby? Let’s try to understand.
What if the nursing mother really wants a beer? Does it have any useful properties? The natural fermentation product contains a certain amount of B vitamins and valuable trace elements, as well as phenolic compounds that improve blood flow. The extracts of hops that enter into its composition have a pronounced soothing and hypnotic effect. However, when entering into breast milk, ethyl alcohol and malt wort components that do not pose a serious danger to an adult can cause irreparable harm to the child’s health, including:
- sleep disorders (narcolepsy, parasomnia, insomnia, lack of a phase of deep sleep);
- weakness, lethargy, inhibition;
- respiratory depression, nocturnal apnea;
- retarded mental and physical development;
- slow weight gain;
- tachycardia, low blood pressure;
- increased intestinal colic as a result of irritation of the mucous membranes of the stomach and intestines;
- aggravation of existing diseases, especially in premature infants.
Through what time it is possible to feed the baby if the mother drank beer? It is strictly forbidden to put the baby to the breast for 3 hours after consuming one portion of the intoxicating product. Doctors recommend refraining from feeding for 8-12 hours. In the case of taking strong alcohol or a large amount of weak alcohol, the time of detoxification can increase up to one day.
Repeated decanting or drinking of alcohol with clean water will not bring the proper result, as the products of its decay will enter the breast milk until the harmful substances are completely eliminated by the kidneys.
