Speech delay in the baby
Approximately 5-10% of children have developmental disorders that cause delay in speech and language development (besides speech, these are also other forms of communication: sign language, writing, visual skills (for example, the ability to show something).
At first, parents usually notice that the child in his linguistic development lags behind other children of the same age, and describe it as a child does not speak, he speaks late, does not yet speak.
Delay speech may be associated with:
- difficulty in pronouncing sounds (eg, anatomical problems with vocal cords),
- speech reception (deafness),
- speech processing (mental retardation or deviations in linguistic development).
There are two main types of speech delay:
– delay expression, ie. inability to create speech,
– delay in perception, i. the inability to process and understand the speech of others.
Also, a child may experience a combined delay of two kinds (both expressions and perceptions).
Most children with language impairments also have language development disorders, delay in the development of expression, but are not violated by age-appropriate visual language skills (recognition of parents, subjects, response to facial expressions, performance of commands that are accompanied by a gesture demonstration, what to do, objects, etc.), the perception and understanding of other people’s speech (recognition of sounds and turning in their direction, fulfillment of one-, two-step coma etc., are not accompanied by gestures, the ability to show the called part of the body and objects), although some children still observed easily changeable or delay the development of perception. With early therapy, most of these young children improve their speech during the junior school age and, as a result, they practically do not differ from ordinary healthy children.
