To study the geography of my three-year-old son, I bought a political globe. At first, he simply drove it around its axis (it was so interesting). Not knowing how to attract the attention of the child to the geography lessons, I began to think with what to combine our classes.
Continents and Oceans
The first thing that came to my mind was to look at a book about animals and show which mainland certain animals lived on. My son liked this turn of events, so he began to look at the globe with pleasure.
Often we played the game Who, Where Lives ?. I called the animal, and the son showed where it lives. Then there was his turn. The continents and its inhabitants were called in turn.
After a while, he knew that:
– giraffes, lions and tigers live in Africa,
– Kangaroo, dog Dingo – in Australia,
– penguins, fur seals, seals – on the Antarctic.
Over time, could show any continent and tell who lives on it.
It was more difficult with the oceans. Though there are only four of them, but according to the previous scheme (by inhabitants) it was not possible to remember. I had to explain differently:
1 Ocean – Quiet, it is the largest and washes several continents
Ocean 2 – Indian, located near India (India remembered by color almost immediately).
3 Ocean – Arctic, located on top of the globe
Ocean 4 – Atlantic, turned out to be the most memorable. She told the legend of the underwater kingdom (the sunken continent) – Atlanta, after which the ocean was named. And voi la – remembered immediately 🙂
We remember the countries
Gradually began to show the country. Ukraine is our homeland, the son remembered right away. I recognized her on the globe by the orange color. Then he remembered Russia (the largest country), India and China. His patience for training was no longer enough. I had to go back to game training.
Now my son is 5.6 years old and we are still mastering the globe. I call the country, and he is looking for her. I try to call the big countries, it’s easier to read the name and find it. And he says the smallest countries and very happy when I can not find them for a long time!
Once a son found Honduras (and was able to read the name). After a long search, I could not find this country. What he was pleased! I was able to drive my mother to a dead end 🙂 He liked this country so much that everyone who came to us asked: Where is Honduras? With a satisfied smile brought the globe. And after vain attempts to find the wonder-country, the son proudly poked his finger at a small spot on the isthmus of two continents.
In addition to the globe, we read the book My Planet Earth and watch the cartoon Geography for the little ones. So that we learn to go well)))
Do you do geography with your children? How do you talk about countries and continents?
