In the autumn, my daughter will go to the first class, and we slowly make the necessary purchases. I wrote in a separate article about how to assemble a wardrobe for a first grader, and today I would like to talk about the rules for choosing a children’s backpack for school.
The main three: a backpack, satchel and briefcase. Backpack we have acquired more than once – usually so called soft bag with two straps, which the child carries on his back. The classic model is a backpack with one / two large compartments and a half-height pocket on the outside. In the vast majority of models, the back is soft.
Satchel – this is the same backpack, but already having a rigid form. Again, there are one or two large compartments. Due to solid material, the pack usually weighs more than a backpack. Of all the models that I considered, I could not find a satchel weighing less than one kilogram.
Portfolio For a first grader, I think, the option is not suitable. He has one strap, you need to wear it on one shoulder, which is hard and not so convenient for the children’s spine.
Orthopedists agree that the children’s backpack should not be more than the back of a child. Honestly, it was quite difficult to find such a model, because the back of her daughter is narrow, and almost all the backpacks were wider than her. In any case, you need to strive for the minimum size.
As for the weight, the recommendations agree that it should be no more than 10-15% of the child’s weight (this is a complete backpack!).
Back, webbing and bottom
Definitely, the back should be orthopedic. Firstly, in this way the load on the spine is significantly reduced, and secondly, it will help to correctly form the child’s posture.
Obviously, the straps should be wide and adjustable. The wider the strap, the better the load is distributed on the shoulders of the child.
The material of the bottom of the backpack is also important – it must be tough enough not to sag under the weight of textbooks and notebooks. Firstly, it is ugly, and secondly, it is an additional load on the lower back.
Here I tend to a strong polyester, from which almost all current backpacks and backpacks are made. Firstly, it is durable, secondly, it does not need special care (unlike the same skin, for example), and thirdly, many models have a special water-repellent coating, which is also very convenient.
Additional attention should be paid to the material and quality of the seams on the handles and zippers. After all, it will be a shame if they fail in the first few months, agree.
On many models on the side there are special pockets for a bottle with some water, which we still use (daughter goes to gymnastics with a backpack).
Also, many manufacturers offer to additionally purchase cases, folders and bags for interchangeable shoes, which are made in the same color scheme as the backpack.
By the way, about the coloring – she often cares about children much more than the presence of an orthopedic back. Now it seems to me that my daughter will agree to go to school with anything if her favorite characters from Monster High are depicted on it.
Well, I hope I can persuade her to some kind of neutral option, so as not to buy a new backpack when she is carried away by other heroes.
These are my requirements for a children’s backpack for a first grader. I am pleased to hear advice from more experienced mothers!
