When my youngest daughter was 6 months old, we went for a routine examination to the orthopedist. There I learned that my child had flat-valgus feet. At that moment I didn’t know what it was and first of all I climbed into the medical encyclopedia at home.
Flat-valgus feet – what is it?
So, I learned that this is the pathology of the ligamentous-muscular system of the children’s foot, in which the heel is deflected to the outside, and the arch of the foot opposite tends downwards. Unfortunately, this disease is not so rare. If the pathology is congenital, then an experienced orthopedist can reveal it even at the age of 1 month.
But there may be another case when the child has a weak muscle tone, and when the baby begins to walk, the feet do not withstand the load and begin to lean inward. Sometimes this pathology is not noticed for a long time and they miss the opportunity to start timely treatment.
What causes pathology
Kids with flat-valgus feet get tired very quickly, it is hard for them to walk for a long time. If the treatment is not practiced, over time, the child’s legs twist higher in the knee joints and will resemble the letter X in shape. And this in turn leads to poor posture, scoliosis and deformity of the pelvic bones.
The treatment is prescribed by an orthopedic doctor and usually includes the following points:
- wearing orthopedic shoes.
The main thing that parents should pay attention to is special exercises for feet that need to be done daily. This is both the most difficult, because A small child will do them willingly only if he wants to. So you have to invent various games, sing songs and recite poems, if only the child would sit quietly.
Another very good result gives a massage mat. You can buy it in a specialty store or make it yourself. True, such rugs have one thing: to achieve the result, it is necessary that the child walk on it for at least 10 minutes every day. My daughter runs the maximum on the rug and if she wants.
Therefore, in the summer I was engaged in other activities. We lived 3 months on the Black Sea, and there I took my child along the rocky shore. Very often I had to hear reproaches addressed to compassionate vacationers. Probably, from the outside it looked like a mockery.
But the most interesting thing is that when we came to an orthopedist in the fall, he said that the diagnosis can be practically removed! Of course, a small deformation still remains and therefore you should not relax, but it is important that we are on the right path, you just need not stop at what has been achieved, and then continue the treatment.
It is advisable for all parents to know about preventive measures for flat-valgus feet. First of all, do not rush to put the child on the legs! Although many grandmothers still insist that the child should be put in 7 months or placed in a walker. In addition, it is necessary to engage in the prevention of rickets and put on a child only good anatomic shoes.
I wish your baby’s legs to be healthy!
