For 5 years we have encountered this phenomenon only once, and this is not uncommon, because, according to statistics, almost every fifth child faces this state. With proper treatment, the effects of acetone can be eliminated quickly enough – within a few days. I hope my experience will be useful for you.
Acetone – this is not a popular name, because acetonemic syndrome is the accumulation in the blood of the protein metabolism, ketone bodies, which are underdeveloped by the body. And these bodies consist of acetone and acetoacetic acid.
The causes of this phenomenon are many – from stress and overwork to infectious diseases. If this is a regular occurrence for a child, the causes may be liver damage, diabetes mellitus, and even genetic diseases.
In our case, the cause was poisoning or enterovirus infection, because my daughter also had diarrhea.
It is not necessary to carry tests to the laboratory to determine the level of acetone in the urine. In the pharmacy, you can purchase special test strips for home use. They look like a pregnancy test – a paper strip with a reagent at the tip. The bank shows a color scale, according to which the level of acetone is determined.
Test strips are sold for 25 or 50 pieces per pack, rather than a piece, so that you can determine the level of acetone in the dynamics. In the future, buying them does not make sense, because, after opening, the storage period of the banks is 3 months.
The very presence (but not the level) of acetone can be determined on its own – by sniffing the breath of the child. Although here everything is individual. For example, characteristic smell I only heard from my daughter. Grandmother did not feel it, although the test strips confirmed its presence.
Drinking should be abundant and fractional. I fed my daughter from a five-cube syringe (without a needle!) Every 5-10 minutes. The daily volume of fluid depends on body weight – approximately 120 ml per 1 kg.
Sorbents are suitable for drinking – Regidron, Humana Electrolyte, Atoxyl, non-carbonated alkaline waters.
If vomiting is present, the liquid is injected intravenously (using a dropper, in a hospital setting), and sometimes drugs are prescribed that inhibit the gag reflex. Diarrhea also contributes to the constant dehydration of the body, therefore, as part of therapy, the intake of appropriate drugs (Enterol, Nifuroksazid) is necessary.
Here it is necessary to comply strict diet, so that the load on the gastrointestinal tract was minimal. If the child does not want to eat, do not force, you can give crackers or plain biscuits. Banned fresh vegetables and fruits (you can baked apple), fatty foods, dairy products.
There is a list of prohibited products that increase the level of ketone bodies in the blood, which provokes the appearance of acetone. Among them: liver, sausages, herring, spinach, sorrel, green beans, cauliflower, beans, kiwi, sour cream.
If there is a positive trend – the level of acetone falls, you can gradually enter into the diet simple porridge on the water, vegetable soups.
By the way, the cause of acetonemic syndrome is often not the food itself, but its quantity. Therefore, it is better to feed the baby than to overfeed. For example, the daughter of my girlfriend got this diagnosis after the New Year, when she managed to eat all the chocolates from a New Year’s gift in one sitting from the light hand of her grandfather.
At the first manifestations of acetone, it is important to immediately consult a doctor who will help identify the cause of this condition. Often accompanied by vomiting, diarrhea, high body temperature – in this case, medical assistance is required, in some cases, inpatient treatment is prescribed.
It is very important to drink plenty of fluids, it is the liquid that will help to bring the decay products out of the body. It should be remembered that acetonemic syndrome is not so harmless, and it is important to start treatment as soon as possible, otherwise health problems cannot be avoided.
