Three books of the series Above the Ground and Under the Ground — Nature, Around the World, and the City of MANN, IVANOV, and FERBER Publishing Houses — have appeared recently. The entire series has one regular contributor – Ann-Sophie Bomann. All three books are translated from French.
A wonderful developing series of books is designed for reading by older children from 1 to 4 years. I would have made the age frame much wider – the book will be interesting and older children. What can I say, even if I took something useful for myself from it 🙂
How are these books arranged?
These books are not quite ordinary. Although designed for small children, they are not just text in pictures. They are full of small secret doors, looking for which the child will see what is hidden from view. Here grows a bush. By tilting the flap with a bush pattern, you can see that a bunny (or a hedgehog, or a fox cub, or even a boy playing hide and seek with his sister) hid behind him.
The second page of each turn turns down, showing what is at the bottom of the sea, underground or under buildings. Any child is a reading game will be interesting.
All sheets are made of thick cardboard, and this allows us to hope that the books will live a long time.
Nature above and below ground. Ann-Sophie Bohmann, Clotilde Perrin
In this book, five sections: In the river, In the sea, In the mountains, In the woods, In the garden. In the last one, I took note of one technique for growing leeks;)
When we read this book, my son loves to look into various holes and hollows, inside an anthill and into the depths of a cave. It is interesting for him to examine and compare the roots of trees and carrots, the bottom of the river and the bottom of the sea.
Around the world above and below ground. Anne-Sophie Bohmann, Charlene Picard
In this book, we visited the northern seas and hot deserts, looked into the crater of a volcano and under the island in the ocean and almost got lost in the rainforest. We learned what an oasis is, met new animals, and found out that there are trees as high as a twenty-story house.
City above ground and underground. Ann-Sophie Bomann, Alexandra Ouar
The device of the city, like any mechanism, is also very interesting to my child.
How does the fountain work, where does the rainwater go and what is inside the mixer, except for concrete. Then my son surprised me when he opened the valve and said: Spiral blades. This is my dad told me.
On the last page, next to the huge shopping center, there is a small stall selling books. So I want to shake hands with the author.
Books are cool. And the reading itself, I tell you, is not the main thing in them. There is not much text here – an adult will have to tell more than read. Watch, read, study, memorize, learn – these are the main words that characterize books from the series Above Ground and Underground. And one more word – to communicate. With mom or dad, older sister or grandmother. And it is worth a lot.
