Yellow body in pregnancy
In a woman’s body, complex cyclic processes are performed every month, aimed at maturing the egg and its exit from the ovary. It is thanks to them that a woman is able to conceive and bear a child and feel the greatest happiness in the world – the joy of motherhood.
If the fertilization of the egg does not occur, then it dies, and the woman starts another menstruation. If the pregnancy comes, then the body begins to occur hormonal changes that contribute to its preservation, growth and development of the fetus.
Maturation of the egg in the ovary occurs in a small vial – it is also called the follicle or Graafov vesicle. After the egg reaches its maturity, the walls of the bubble burst, and it comes out.
The cavity of the bubble is filled with blood and in it special granular cells begin to actively form and develop. They, in turn, produce a substance of yellow color, called lutein. The tissue formed on the site of the burst follicle is yellow, which is why it is called the yellow body.
At its core, the yellow body is the gland of internal secretion, because it synthesizes progesterone. This hormone is necessary for the attachment (implantation) of a fertilized egg and the further development of pregnancy.
The yellow body formed in the ovary very quickly reaches its heyday. The further fate of it directly depends on whether the ovum was fertilized or not.
- If the pregnancy has not occurred, then the yellow body functions for 12 to 15 days, after which it dies and the woman begins menstruation. In this case, they speak of the yellow body of menstruation.
- The yellow body during pregnancy actively develops within 13 – 15 weeks. After that its functions pass to the formed placenta, and itself it gradually ceases its activity. At this point a very small whitish hem is formed.
Yellow body as a sign of pregnancy
Some women mistakenly believe that if during an ultrasound study they have a yellow body in the ovary, then this is an accurate sign of pregnancy. However, it is not. In fact, the yellow body is formed in the ovary after ovulation, and it can only testify that the egg is ripe and the woman’s body is ready for a possible pregnancy.
