Why do kidney ultrasound to newborns?
Almost every baby at the age of 1 month is assigned ultrasound diagnosis. As a rule, pediatricians are limited to only two examinations: ultrasound of the newborn’s heart (cardioehography) and ultrasound of the brain (neurosonography). However, there are cases when, in addition to examining these organs, the baby is also prescribed to undergo mandatory ultrasound of the kidneys.
To be frightened of such purpose it is not necessary, as a direction on US is yet the diagnosis, and only necessary precaution. In particular, this applies to children at risk.
So, for example, if the parents have chronic diseases of the genitourinary system, or if the pregnancy has occurred with serious complications, then only the kidney ultrasound can detect the slightest deviations in the development of these vital organs in the child or on the contrary to dispel all the doctor’s fears.
Due to the timely detection of such diseases in the infant, like polycystic kidney and hydronephrosis, doctors are in time to prescribe treatment. Also, thanks to ultrasound of the kidneys and bladder, vesicoureteral reflux can be detected (reverse urine transfer into the ureters from the bladder).
In the absence of proper treatment, these diseases can lead not only to the disability of the child, but also to death.
