The first screening ultrasound in pregnancy is prescribed by a gynecologist with the purpose of revealing the malformations of the fetus, detection of genetic abnormalities, it helps diagnose anomalies of the location and blood flow of the placenta.
Screening for the first trimester is carried out within the time frame specified by the order of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation No. 457. For screening ultrasound of 1 trimester, a period of 10-14 weeks is defined. All ultrasound studies at an earlier time are done to determine pregnancy and identify an ectopic pregnancy.
The first screening ultrasound is performed during pregnancy in medical genetic centers or antenatal clinics equipped with appropriate equipment and containing specialists in prenatal diagnostics in the staff.
Screening examination is usually done transabdominally, that is, through the anterior abdominal wall with the help of an ultrasound diagnostic device. In some cases, a vaginal sensor is used. It is required to use it, if through the abdominal wall it is impossible to reliably estimate all the necessary characteristics of the fetus.
