Rubella during pregnancy
Rubella – a disease of a viral nature, transmitted by airborne droplets. Flowing quite easily in young children, rubella in pregnant women can have disastrous consequences for an unborn baby.
Particularly dangerous is the infection of the virus in the first trimester of pregnancy.
Infection with the rubella virus occurs during close contact with a sick person: by sneezing, coughing, kissing or talking. Approximately one week after the virus enters the body, the person with the following symptoms notes: a slight fever, chills, headaches, stuffiness of the throat and nose, inflammation of the mucous eyes, and an increase and soreness of the lymph nodes on the neck, behind the ears. After 24 hours on the body, as a rule, there is a rash, which is a small patch of pink, having a clear outline.
Eruptions usually disappear after a few days.
In adults, all manifestations of the disease are much more pronounced than in children. In the same way rubella appears in pregnant women, the symptoms usually do not cause a special inconvenience to a woman and go without any harm to her health, while for the general course of pregnancy and fetal formation the disease poses a serious threat.
Future mummies need to know what rubella is dangerous for pregnant women, how to protect their baby from this disease, what preventive measures to take.
Rubella virus, hitting the body of a pregnant woman, affects the placenta and infects the fetus. Infection of the fetus leads to the formation of a syndrome of congenital rubella (CRS), which causes chronic pathologies of development and various diseases of the neonatal period.
The defeat of one or another organ depends on the gestational age at which the infection of the future mother occurred with the rubella virus.
From 3 to 11 weeks there is an active development of the brain, the formation of the genitourinary and bone systems. Infection of the fetus during this period leads to brain damage, resulting in cramps, paralysis, CNS depression syndrome, and then mental retardation, speech disorders, slowing of the speed of psychomotor reactions in a child during the newborn period.
Anomalies of the development of the skeleton and genitourinary system also develop.
From 4 to 7 week there is formation of eyes, cardiovascular and bronchopulmonary systems. Infection of the future mother with rubella at this stage of pregnancy can lead to blindness, cataract development, glaucoma, heart defects, and fetal hypoxia, which will lead to a delay in its growth and general development.
