Almost every future mother really faces edema – and this is the opinion of Russian and foreign doctors.
And then disagreements begin. The first believe that in nine cases out of ten edemas lead to gestosis – a dangerous complication of pregnancy.
And on the basis of this, require expectant mothers to be attentive to the drinking regime. The latter have more optimistic statistics and do not advise women in the situation to restrict the use of liquid too strictly.
The human body is almost 80% water. If this amount decreases, problems will begin: the blood will become thicker, it will circulate more slowly through the blood vessels, blood clots are formed, and the organs of the mother and baby will not receive nutrients and oxygen. Pregnant women are still more difficult, because they almost double the amount of circulating blood, which means that the body needs more moisture.
The surcharge goes for different needs, including on amniotic fluid, which are updated every 3-6 hours, and for the placenta, which provides the baby with the necessary nutrients and oxygen.
Small blood vessels (capillaries) do not cope with unusual volumes and begin to flow through the walls. It accumulates in tissues and does not hurry outside – interfering with the slowed water-salt metabolism and progesterone, the level of which increases during pregnancy.
If a woman additionally exceeds the drinking limit, the situation gets out of control and can turn into serious trouble for mom and baby.
How to avoid swelling in pregnancy? Gynecologist necessarily advise the future mother to limit the amount of water to one and a half liters per day and exclude from the menu dishes that cause thirst.
Swelling, which should not be particularly worried, are associated with lymphatic retention in the lower extremities (lymphostasis). The situation does not signal serious illnesses, does not require treatment, but causes a lot of inconvenience.
At the end of the working day, held in a static position – standing or sitting – there are swelling on the legs. They pass pretty quickly.
It is enough to take a horizontal position for 30-40 minutes, and the problem will be solved. But if swellings are formed in the morning, when you are still in bed, everything is much more complicated. They can be harbingers of gestosis.
