Can I get pregnant while taking birth control pills?
The planned pregnancy is the only option that suits a modern active woman who wants to dispose of her life and body independently. Since nature has not provided women with the opportunity to plan pregnancy and childbirth, every woman has to choose a contraceptive device herself. Oral contraceptives (OC) are the most popular in our time, but since the instructions of these drugs do not guarantee a 100% effect, many women have a natural question: Can I get pregnant with taking birth control pills?
To get a reliable answer to this question, you need to know what are the contraceptive pills and what is the mechanism of action of these drugs.
All currently used birth control pills are divided into 2 types:
- Oral contraceptives of the combined type, consisting of synthetic analogues of female hormones – estrogens (steroid sex hormones, which are produced predominantly by the follicular apparatus of the ovaries and regulate the monthly cycle) and progesterone (prepares the endometrium to fix the fertilized egg). This type of contraceptive can be monophasic (all tablets contain the same concentration of hormones during the whole intake) or three-phase (tablets contain hormones in different combinations, so the intake of each type of tablets depends on the day of the menstrual cycle).
- Gestagenic (containing only progesterone) tablets, which are also called mini-pili. Such contraceptive pills are prescribed if there are contraindications to the use of preparations containing estrogen, nursing mothers and smoking ladies after 35 years.
It is important to take into account that when taking low-dose OK, the monthly ones may be scarce or absent altogether, as the endometrium under the influence of tablets does not reach the thickness required for detachment.
In those cases when the monthly did not begin during the interval between taking the pills, the next package should be started only in the absence of pregnancy (the most informative blood test for hCG, but you can also use the pregnancy test).
Thus, the risk of becoming pregnant while taking birth control pills is minimized and directly depends on compliance with the instructions to the drug.
