Even before pregnancy, I sometimes heard friends complaining of heartburn, but I never understood what it was. However, in the first pregnancy, I myself faced this ailment. Heaviness in the stomach, unpleasant burning in the stomach, belching – all these are symptoms of heartburn. What causes it and how to fight it? Let’s figure it out.
What is heartburn?
There is a precise definition in science. Heartburn (translated from Greek means fire) is a burning sensation or heat in the lower chest or epigastric region.
But what is heartburn, the doctor explained to me simply and easily. Sometimes the food is not digested completely in the stomach and returns back to the esophagus. Since the stomach contains acid, then it enters the esophagus, and it suffers from the effects of this acid. Heartburn occurs most often after a meal or when a young mother lies.
Almost 50% of pregnant women have heartburn. And most often it occurs in the second and third trimester. During the first pregnancy, I had small bouts that quickly passed. But in the second pregnancy, I suffered from heartburn every day.
By the way, the mother-in-law spoke, heartburn is a sign of a boy. I do not understand how this is connected … Yes, and a girl was born.
What causes heartburn?
Often it is the wrong diet that causes heartburn. Fat and spicy foods, sweet dishes and sour berries, fried foods and pickles – all this causes discomfort. And it is better to exclude them from your diet.
It is also observed that heartburn occurs when a woman is in a horizontal position. In addition, it is not recommended to lean forward after meals, for example, to tie shoelaces. It is best to be a little like, sit, look through the magazine.
During pregnancy, drugs can cause heartburn.
If heartburn often torments, you should consult a doctor.
How to avoid heartburn?
The main thing – do not overeat! It is better to eat more often, but in small portions. We, as a rule, if we sit down at a table, we eat everything at once.
You should not eat at night, the last meal should be three hours before bedtime. And before bedtime you can drink a glass of warm water.
Also, the doctor advised me to eat foods that have alkaline properties. This, for example, cream, boiled meat and lean. Vegetables are also recommended to eat boiled. And apples, for example, can be baked.
It is necessary during pregnancy to monitor the work of the intestine. If constipation occurs, you need to get rid of them. I was helped by beets and fresh cucumbers, plums and prunes.
Can I Take Heartburn Medication?
Do not self-medicate! The use of any drugs should be only in consultation with the doctor. Often prescribed drugs that neutralize the acid. I was prescribed for a single use, but I tried not to abuse them, but simply to monitor my diet.
Many people with heartburn drink soda dissolved in water. Do not do this during pregnancy. Soda will work, but not for long, and then heartburn will resume. But sodium, which is contained in soda, can cause swelling.
If you still suffer from heartburn, in my opinion, it is better to pay attention to nutrition. Do not forget that any drugs are harmful to the baby. But heartburn hurts only mom, not a child.
