Umbilical hernia in a newborn: determine the type of education and choose the right treatment
The birth of a child is a joyful event in the life of each family, so parents want to know as much as possible about possible problems in the early years of the baby’s life and their treatment. One of the most common infant pathologies is the umbilical hernia in a newborn. It can disappear on its own or with the help of conservative treatment, but in some cases, surgical intervention is necessary to prevent complications.
Umbilical hernia in the baby is the site of the intestine that sags through the abdominal wall. In the first months of life, a violation can go unnoticed due to the fact that the crumb always spends on the back, and the periods of crying, accompanied by a strong muscle strain, are short. Over time, the rounded formation begins to prominently protrude above the peritoneum and displaces the navel.
According to official statistics, signs of this pathology are present in 20-25% of babies younger than 1 year. Before suspecting the danger of this condition and going to the surgeon, you should consult a pediatrician about the applicability of conservative therapy.
The latter category is particularly numerous and dangerous not only by the pressure of the gases and the tension during defecation. Discomfort in the abdomen causes the baby to cry, intra-abdominal pressure abnormally increases, and the internal tissues protrude. Frequent coughing in newborns is no less dangerous for abdominal muscles than crying: any excess load can be fraught with hernias.
During the first months of life, parents may not notice a slight swelling due to the fact that the child is lying down and the organs do not press on the front wall. In the future, the hernia begins to manifest itself by such symptoms as:
- round protrusion in the navel, which appears or grows when the tummy tucks (the volume and shape of the defect depends on the size of the umbilical ring);
- frequent anxiety of the baby (may occur several times a day);
- bloating of the intestine;
- Rounded swelling on the abdomen, which is visible, if the child is in an upright position, redness around the defect is possible;
- Growth of education as the growth of crumbs.
