On the sucking reflex: weak or no sucking reflex
The vital activity of the organism of every person, including a newborn, determines reflexes.
Reflexes of the newborn; it is a response to stimuli from the internal and external environment of the body. Congenital reflexes are embedded in the nervous system even before the birth of the child.
Suckling Reflex in a Newborn ; this is the ability to suck mother’s breast or pacifier on a bottle with artificial nourishment, embedded in the mouth. No one teaches a child to suck. It’s not a habit, it’s one of the important reflexes. It is formed in the intra-uterine process of development. And in the future it has an impact on the formation of the psyche in early childhood. With the help of a sucking reflex, the newborn quenches his hunger.
It occurs for the first time hours of life and refers to congenital reflexes, which ensures the survival of the baby. This is the first and most important unconditioned reflex. During feeding, when the touch of the sky occurs, the baby begins to suck the milk from the mother’s breast or from the bottle, sucks it. The severity of the sucking reflex in newborns determines whether the child is hungry or full. After eating, the sucking reflex weakens. But within an hour again makes itself felt. Very well calms the child rhythmic sucking.
Responsible for the reflex of sucking are 5 pairs of cranial nerves. For a baby it’s a pleasure to suck a pacifier and a very hard job sucking milk from the mother’s breast.
By the age of 12 months, the sucking reflex is weakening, and by 3-4 years is lost.
Check the sucking reflex in the child is very easy: you need to stroke the cheek or touch your lips. The child opens her mouth and pushes her tongue as if she wants to suck.
The weakness or absence of the sucking reflex is determined by the method of feeding. Healthy children immediately and vigorously take the mother’s breast and greedily suck. Unlike healthy babies, newborns with a decreased sucking reflex fall asleep during feeding, sluggish, swallow very rarely, and often completely refuse the breast. Weakened and premature children are discharged from the hospital when the baby can suck on his own.
Here are the reasons why there is often a weak reflex of sucking and it is very simple to check – it is necessary to put a finger in the baby’s mouth, in the absence of deviations, he instinctively sucks a finger.
The main reasons for the decline of the sucking reflex:
- severe somatic conditions;
- hypoxia during pregnancy or during childbirth;
- paresis of facial nerves;
- mental retardation;
- sometimes stomatitis, acute respiratory infections, ARVI.
