Kefalogematoma in a newborn
Kefalogematoma is the birth trauma in newborns, when a hemorrhage occurs from one or both sides of the periosteum of the skull. As a result, a cone on the head is formed, whose diameter, depending on the degree of injury, can reach from a few centimeters to twenty. Often the diagnosis is not made immediately, since many babies at birth can observe a birth tumor, passing the birth canal, the head of the child is under pressure, as a result, there is edema, which falls in 1-2 days.
A neurological cephalohematoma in two days does not pass, but, conversely, may even increase in size, since during this period of life the blood is not yet able to quickly collapse and continues to enter the periosteum, the swelling grows. Also, from a generic tumor, it is distinguished by clear boundaries – hemorrhage is localized strictly within the affected skull bones.
How is the trauma: the child moves through the birth canal, the skull bones are squeezed, why the skin can shift along with the periosteum and the vessel burst, a hemorrhage begins. It occurs in 0.3-0.5% of children, given the level of development of modern medicine, when doctors and midwives have learned to prevent many problems in childbirth, this indicator is considered quite frequent in comparison with other possible injuries.
In most cases, the hematoma dissolves on its own, the only treatment required is to regularly apply it with resorbants such as troxevasin. Therefore, having heard this diagnosis in the hospital, it is definitely not worth panicking.
