When my daughter was breastfed, sometimes it seemed to me that I did not have much milk. I was worried about how little food a baby gets, and I tried to increase its number.
There are many tips on how to do this, but are they all correct? I will try to understand this in today’s article.
Drinking milk tea
This advice is a hit among my relatives and friends. If you include common sense, you can remember that breast milk (GM) is not formed from the milk consumed, but from blood and lymph under the influence of the hormone prolactin. Therefore, the amount of milk does not depend on the amount of fluid consumed, but on the amount of hormones.
By the way, this is another myth – if you drink sparkling water, your baby will have colic. Even with great desire, carbon dioxide can not get into the milk, bypassing the wall of the stomach and blood at the same time.
Although, on my own experience, I repeatedly noticed that after a cup of tea the breast was directly filled with milk, there was a feeling of fullness and tingling. Now I know the answer to this question. It turns out that there are receptors in the language that, upon contact with heat, stimulate the production of oxytocin (another hormone that takes part in the production of GM).
In other words, you can drink 5 liters of tea with milk every day, but all this will be eliminated through the kidneys (by overloading them) and not going to the GM if there is a disorder with hormones in the body.
Additional energy in this case is necessary not to ensure the nutritional value of the GM, but to cover the energy consumption of the female body during its production. The fact is that fats and proteins for GM emit directly the cells of the mammary gland.
Therefore, even with poor maternal nutrition, the GM has nutritional and beneficial properties, because the body uses all reserves and reserves for this. But good nutrition is necessary to support the mother’s body.
If we turn to the figures, the energy consumption of the female body for the production of GM is about 400-500 kcal per day. It is on so much more nutritious that the feeding ration should be, and not twice as much, and, of course, not at the expense of fatty and heavy foods.
Lactation products and teas
All these products are labeled, which attract gentle nursing organisms. Of course, I want to buy a wonderful tea, which will increase the amount of milk and make it more useful for the baby (for example, reduce colic).
As they say, all the problems in my head. And if worries about the amount of milk evaporate with the purchase of such tea, why not? In this case, the placebo effect works. Of course, there are herbs that affect the hormonal background of the body, but they should be drunk according to a certain pattern and quite a long time.
What really works?
Work in this case, as you already understood, only hormones. It is faults in the hormonal background that cause an insufficient amount or lack of milk.
How to raise their level? The production of prolactin is affected by night feedings, frequency of attachments. But oxytocin is more associated with the emotional state of a nursing mother. I have repeatedly noticed for myself that even thoughts about my daughter can cause a feeling of bursting in the chest.
And once I left my daughter for my mother and went to the store, there I heard the cry of a completely unfamiliar baby. Needless to say, the breast was immediately filled with milk.
Therefore, I tried to be as calm as possible during GW, to rest more, to sleep, not to worry about trifles. And as much as I didn’t want to sleep all night, I didn’t rule out nightly feeding during the entire period of breastfeeding.
