I expected the appearance of the first tooth of my son with some special trepidation and impatience. It seemed to me a little miracle! And the surprise did not take long to wait: exactly one week before our baby was 5 months old, we found him as much as two lower incisors.
How to determine that a child teething?
With teething every little person everything is individually. Both the timing of the appearance of the first and subsequent teeth, and the symptoms accompanying this rather painful process can differ.
Although our baby had two teeth at the same time, we did not notice any signs of eruption. Is that a month before it began a very abundant salivation. And in the end everything happened like this: the evening before, there was nothing, and in the morning we received a double gift.
Recently, the son was 7 months old, and we are about to expect the appearance of upper incisors. And although I somehow read that the most painful thing is the appearance of the first tooth, it seems to me that everything happens the other way around, incrementally. Now the baby is often naughty, crying, he wants to gnaw everything.
Every day I carefully examine the gums and wherever there are teeth in the near future, I notice redness and swelling. This is another sign that suggests that the teeth do not take long to wait. Although some gums, on the contrary, become pale and thin before the appearance of teeth.
Also, the symptoms of their early eruption may be fever, loss of appetite, poor sleep. But it is important to remember that the process is natural, so there’s no need to panic: in most cases, the baby’s body copes with teething without serious problems. Nature has thought of everything for us.
When to expect the first teeth?
Usually, the baby’s first tooth appears at 6-8 months. Although there may be deviations from these terms in one direction or another. But the rule is: up to a year there must be at least one tooth, otherwise it makes sense to consult a dentist. The child is then examined for the presence of rudiments of teeth. Their absence is scientifically called adentia, but it is extremely rare.
One of the most important factors determining teething time is heredity. That is why we should not have been surprised at their early appearance in the son: in our relatives, all the babies can boast of the first tooth by the age of 4 months. So here we are even a bit late with the deadlines.
On average, by the end of the first year of life, the child already has 8 teeth. And by three years, milk teeth (there are 20 of them) should all be in place. And subsequently, from the age of five, permanent ones begin to replace dairy ones.
How to help your baby when teeth are cut?
When teeth are cut, the baby usually wants to chew everything. He pulls everything in his mouth, which I now observe from our son. And I act on the principle: let him chew everything that is not dangerous, and always under my supervision.
And since his mother’s cheek or shoulder, which he likes to nibble, is not always around, various teething toys come to his aid. The most comfortable ones are those that can be cooled. They are absolutely safe, as inside the ordinary water. Before using such a toy, you just need to put it in a refrigerator for a couple of hours. In addition to a soft massage of the gums, they also reduce the discomfort due to the effects of cold.
In addition to toys, many parents use dryers or crackers to massage gums and speed up the appearance of teeth. But my experience has shown that you need to be careful with them. Although his son really likes to gnaw, once he scratched the gum very badly with a sharp edge of the broken off drying. Therefore, I decided not to give them anymore. Not to mention the danger of choking.
Also, the pediatrician recommended that we use children’s anesthetic gels for gums. But while such a need has not appeared, we cope without them. I see in such means one drawback – the short duration of action. That is, they need to be applied again and again in order to have an effect.
Another one of our favorite folk methods is this: I wrap a finger with clean gauze, wet it in cold water a little and massage the baby’s gums – he especially likes it. This is how I do it several times a day, especially when my son begins to be capricious. After this procedure, he immediately calms down and just radiates peace and tranquility.
How to keep your teeth healthy and beautiful for a long time?
Nowadays, various toothpastes and special brushes for babies are widely advertised, and on the packaging it is written that they can be used from 0 to 3 years, according to the rule: You need to brush a tooth, even if it is still one. After the appearance of the first teeth of my son, I was also tempted to immediately purchase such funds. But I was dissuaded from this sister.
She has been working in dentistry for many years and told me that familiar doctors are not in a hurry with such cleaning of the teeth that have just appeared in their children. First, you can injure your teeth and gums. And secondly, in the paste, even the most innocuous, contains a lot of different unnecessary chemistry for the child.
Therefore, I decided not to take up such an active purge yet. And it will be possible to start teaching the child to oral hygiene a little later. In the meantime, in order to minimize the risk of developing caries, I limit my son to a sweet drink and food containing sugar.
Breast milk also plays a big role in maintaining healthy teeth. When breastfeeding special enzymes protect the teeth from caries, and trace elements and nutrients help keep them strong.
There is also an opinion that as soon as a child has teeth, the nipple becomes contraindicated. Personally, I disagree with that. All the mothers I know, trying to wean the very young babies from the nipples, have achieved only one thing: the babies began to suck their fingers. And it is much worse and more harmful for the formation of bite than a quality, approved by orthodontists dummy.
Although milk teeth will subsequently be replaced by permanent ones, their condition must be taken care of from a very early age. Since too early destruction and removal of a baby tooth may in the future lead to an abnormal bite in a child. And healthy permanent ones will definitely not replace the sick baby teeth.
