When my daughter was 2 years old, I noticed a white coating on her front teeth along the gums. Attention on the fly, I did not convey much. I thought that you just need to brush your teeth more thoroughly. But she didn’t watch the raid.
After a couple of months, the white bloom on one tooth turned brown. After another couple of weeks, the dark spot began to grow. And I, without thinking twice, rushed to children’s dentistry.
Dentist confirmed my concerns – all four front teeth attacked caries. The only thing that the doctor recommended in this case is silvering. This is when silver nitrate is applied to the damaged part of the enamel (a very strong antiseptic), it kills bacteria in the center of tooth decay and creates a protective film.
There are two but in this procedure:
1. It helps to stop the development of caries, if it does not penetrate deeper than the layer of enamel, which is rather thin on the milk teeth. If the caries is deeper, it will continue to spoil the tooth and under the film.
2. After silvering, the problem areas of the teeth become black. Vidocq is still, especially for an unprepared viewer. And especially immediately after the procedure. Actually, this is how it all looks.
The process of silvering and the periods between treatments differ in each case. The doctor conducted three procedures for covering problem teeth with silver nitrate with a difference of a week and let us go back three months. After three months, we again underwent three silvering procedures and again went on vacation for a quarter of the year …
At the moment, almost a year has passed since the first silvering of the teeth of my daughter. Carious process is suspended and the teeth are still intact. The dark color of the daughter’s teeth confuses only me, but not her. But this is not the main thing. The main thing is that the teeth are intact and they do not hurt. I would like to believe that with such means we will be able to save them until the age shift, that is, for another three years. Or, if the grown-up daughter will be embarrassed by this state of affairs, they can always be cured and sealed up in the usual way.
Causes of caries
After I came face to face with caries on the teeth of my daughter, I began to study this process and its causes in more detail. I realized that milk teeth are weaker than permanent teeth and the carious process develops on them very rapidly, literally before our eyes.
Specifically, the dentist did not give any intelligible answers about our causes of caries. The causes of caries in our case could be:
– poor oral hygiene
– nightly breastfeeding
– weak enamel, which, by the way, is formed during the pregnancy of the future mommy
In general, who knows. That happens and that’s it. Thus, with caries and its causes, the question remains open to me. Then I climbed into the Internet to search for answers to my questions.
I learned that there is such a thing as bottle caries. It is formed in the event that there are regular night feeds of the baby with breast milk, a mixture or any drink with sugar. And affects in particular the area of the front upper incisors along the gums, like ours. The one where there is lack of saliva at night and where bacteria are actively breeding.
Of course, everything also depends on the strength of the tooth enamel itself, formed in the womb. The weaker it is, the greater the likelihood that bacteria will harm the teeth.
In general, we had to quickly turn off the night feedings.
Well, for the future, I learned that caries is formed as a result of the destruction of enamel by the products of vital activity of those carious bacteria. And they (bacteria) feed on the remnants of carbohydrate food in the mouth.
Therefore, the first thing that should be done to prevent caries in children and adults is rinse (and better clean) teeth after each meal. Moreover, ideally, rinsing teeth is worth special antiseptic solutions, which not only wash off food debris from teeth, but also kill up to 99% of those bacteria that are harmful to teeth.
Should also Strengthen baby’s tooth enamel. To this end, special remineralizing gels have been developed, which are applied to the teeth after cleaning. The instructions to them say that they even suspend the development of caries at the initial stage (white spot). Do not eliminate, but only suspend due to the partial strengthening of the tooth enamel.
Well, good nutrition nobody canceled. Food rich in calcium, fluorine and phosphorus will also help strengthen tooth enamel. Let no longer dairy (in their case nutrition already will not help the cause), but rudiments of future permanent teeth.
So, my daughter and I had the experience of silvering four front teeth. And now we have such a result. There are a lot of reviews about silver plating in the Internet. In particular, about its uselessness. I would like my review to be a plus to this procedure simply because it has helped us keep the front teeth for a whole year now. And this is already a lot for such a tender and unconscious age.
Have you ever come across such a dental procedure as silvering of teeth? What was your result?
