My niece was born in the twenty-seventh week of pregnancy with a weight of 800 grams. My sister’s birth began suddenly, the waters broke, and it was no longer possible to prolong the pregnancy. The baby did not immediately breathe and was connected to a ventilator. Then the girl was transferred to the first city hospital, and her mother stayed for another week in the maternity hospital.
At that time I was studying at the last year of medical school, and therefore I had a pass to the children’s hospital. I had to be with a girl much more often than my parents. Both mom and dad were allowed only for a couple of hours, since the girl was in intensive care. I watched its growth and development.
In the first three days, the baby was injected with surfactant, and the lungs were finally able to fully open. But Masha still had no independent respiratory movements. They fed the girl through the probe, but she gained weight very slowly.
In fact, the chances that the girl would survive were not many, but in St. Petersburg, neonatologists do real miracles.
Somewhere in about two weeks, Masha could breathe herself. It was a real holiday! Now it was necessary to gain weight up to one kilogram, and then there would be the possibility of transfer to the children’s department. Masha in the daytime was sometimes disconnected from ventilators, this usually happened at a time when her mom or dad came.
Mom could not save milk, which probably happened because of strong experiences. So they fed the girl a mixture. When there were distinct sucking movements, they began to give Masha a bottle. Weight then very quickly crawled up. And when the baby became more than one kilogram, she and her mother were transferred to the department of premature babies. The reason for the premature birth of the sister could not be established.
Causes of Preterm Birth
1. The threat to the life of the mother (eclampsia of pregnant women)
2. The threat of fetal life (placental abruption)
4. Weight Lifting
6. Genetic anomalies
Three months later, the girl was discharged home with a weight of two and a half kilograms. Doctors frightened by various terrible diagnoses, such as oligophrenia and cerebral palsy. But all the fears were completely in vain. None of the diagnoses was confirmed. Masha herself sat down at nine months, at the age of one and a half she walked confidently.
Prematurity affected only the eyes of the girl. Due to the fact that there was retinopathy, the eyes began to see a little worse.
Now the girl is studying in the third grade language school. She is almost completely healthy.
But imagine that quite recently such children would not be cared for at all, because it was believed that if the birth weight is less than one kilogram, then it is a miscarriage. Children born alive were often left to die, for example, on cold window sills.
And if a doctor of mercy began to provide resuscitation measures, then he could just be fired. This was explained by the fact that such children often died or later remained deeply disabled, so the doctors allegedly simply did not want to spoil the statistics.
Currently registered in the registry office and provide assistance to all children whose weight is equal to or exceeds five hundred grams. This happened quite recently, but there is hope that Russia will ever be able to catch up with European countries, where even two hundred gram kids are being nursed.
