Almost the entire pregnancy, my eldest daughter spent in pelvic presentation (booty down). When she was born, the pediatrician still in the hospital advised to pay attention to the legs, they say, such babies often have hip joints dysplasia.
What is hip dysplasia
Having opened the encyclopedia at home, I read that by dysplasia is meant the innate inferiority of the joint. This pathology is caused by the underdevelopment of the joint and leads to dislocation and subluxation of the hip. If this disease is not treated, in the future it can lead to gait disturbances and pain.
Diagnosis of dysplasia
Without waiting for 1 month, when it comes time to go to an appointment with a local surgeon, we did an ultrasound of the legs, which confirmed the diagnosis of the pediatrician from the maternity hospital.
When we showed the ultrasound result to the surgeon in our clinic, he gave me a whole lecture that it was not worth it to go somewhere without his knowledge. Then, having twisted the child’s legs this way and that, the surgeon again confirmed the diagnosis – hip dysplasia. He gave the following recommendations: up to the year to keep the child in special canvas panties that keep the legs in the unfolded state.
To say that I was upset means to say nothing. There were a lot of questions. Can I wear a diaper under such panties? How will the baby move in them? Why our local surgeon did not say a word about therapeutic massage, I still do not understand. Keep in mind that it was 10 years ago, and I did not have the opportunity to receive information on the Internet.
My mother came to the rescue, phoned all friends, she found a good doctor who agreed to advise us. When I told the consultation about canvas panties, the doctor only laughed, it turns out, no one has used this method for a long time. Our pathology was small, so his recommendations were as follows:
After 1 month, a paid masseuse began to come to us. She showed me the exercises, which we then did daily.
- Exercise Butterfly. Starting position: supine. We bend legs and we plant in the parties, knees flap like a butterfly with wings.
- Exercise Cyclist. Starting position: on the back. Hands over the shins. We make soft rotational movements like a bicycle. Move the legs back and forth. Straighten the legs and bend, then press to the tummy.
- Exercise Frog. Starting position: lying on the tummy. Bend the legs one by one, we take each to the side. Hold the hips with your hand pressed to the surface of the table. The pose resembles frog legs. We substitute the hand under the heels, stimulate the child to push off and crawl.
It turns out that dysplasia of the hip joints in newborns is not such a rarity and the best that a mother can take is to engage in prevention.
First of all, try to ensure that the child as often as possible is in a position with retracted legs. I often wore my youngest child in a sling, but in it you want, you do not want, your hips are divorced.
Forget the strict swaddling! Until now, many caring grandmothers insist on this brutal method of swaddling newborns. Even when my daughter was diagnosed with dysplasia, the mother-in-law asked why we didn’t fold her tight.
And of course, do gymnastics and massage with your child.
Let your children have beautiful and healthy legs!
