It seems – what can wait for you after giving birth – fuss, diapers, sleepless nights. And I thought so too. From where I had to wait for problems – I am young, I do not smoke, alcohol – only on holidays, and then – not stronger than wine, I do sports. Why, I went to the local gynecologist at the 37th week – and she told me: I do not hear the heart of the child.
Diagnosis of CHD
I was immediately sent to Doppler ultrasound. The diagnostician could not even make a baby’s cardiogram, as there was a strong bradycardia. I was urgently taken to the maternity ward. Most of the heart defects of the child are diagnosed during pregnancy, however, there are cases when a person already at a sufficiently mature age learns about his illness.
If the defect is serious, it was discovered during pregnancy, then immediately after cesarean section (birth naturally in this situation is very risky), the child is immediately sent to the nearest cardiac surgery unit. If a child is required to be transported to another city, then an ambulance car with the necessary equipment and personnel is specially ordered.
The main thing for future and already accomplished parents who have learned about the child’s diagnosis is not to create panic. The child feels everything, but excitement does not contribute to recovery. Find a really good pediatric cardiologist and pediatrician. I know myself – this is a huge problem, we went to the oblast for consultations, conducted examinations there, but I could not entrust my child to a doctor with a dubious reputation.
Get ready for the fact that significant material costs will be needed – examinations, consultations, medications and (if necessary) surgery – are not cheap. Although the legislation and guaranteed free treatment of such children, in practice, all costs are borne by the parents.
We didn’t need surgery, but we needed a lot of drugs. Free prescriptions were written out to us, but, by an amazing coincidence, right now in the communal pharmacies of our city these drugs were not. And in the next private – please.
Getting used to the diagnosis
Everything parents need to be aware of: your child is a child. He needs care and affection no more and no less than an ordinary child. With him, just as you need to walk, change diapers and treat bruises. The only thing you need to pay attention to is the baby’s immunity.
Children with CHD are highly susceptible to infectious diseases, which, in turn, have a significant load on the heart. For example, my son’s lips and fingers turn blue at elevated body temperature, so it’s impossible to wait for the temperature to go away by itself.
No need to lock the child in the four walls and prohibit him physical activity. Medical gymnastics, physical education, massages – all this will only benefit. Talk to your doctor about which sport is best for your child.
For example, we were advised to pool. But any load should be moderate, therefore it is better not to dream about the Olympic future.
