Water quality is very important for aquatic inhabitants. The incompatibility of its composition with their physiological criteria can ruin the normal vital activity, disrupt the biocenosis established after the fish have been settled.
That is why it is necessary to initially decide: what kind of water to pour into the aquarium in order to prevent negative consequences and diseases.
Aquarium for fish – a small similarity to a natural reservoir, which has its own nuances. Is water of open reservoirs from places of recreational use of people suitable for it? Definitely “no” for the reasons:
- it contains pathogenic and conditionally pathogenic microorganisms that can cause the development of putrefactive processes and diseases of fish;
- Being a place of dumping of sewage, industrial wastes and other waste products of people, it does not guarantee the absence of harmful and dangerous chemical impurities;
- it does not exclude the possibility of the development of helminths, protozoa, insect larvae.
The main reason why it cannot be used is the presence of residual chlorine – an indicator of water disinfection using chlorine-containing preparations. Such substances can cause poisoning of fish, blockade of their basic vital functions.
The first signs of poisoning fish with chlorine are: impaired breathing, too fast and sudden movements, rising to the surface in search of clean water.

Water supplied through centralized water supply networks, raised from underground water sources, may have unfavorable chemical composition characteristics, such as hardness. And in the water content of personal wells increased radiation background, as well as residues of pesticides used in agricultural activities are not excluded.
If tap water is used from the available options, it must be kept open in the open in the light for at least 24 hours so that the residual chlorine turns into unstable compounds and collapses. This method will also allow to normalize the temperature of water to room temperature, which is optimal for biological organisms.
In the process of preparing water for an aquarium, many turn to its distillation. Such water treatment has a positive characteristic in terms of softening and antiseptic, but the final product is quickly colonized by microflora and has a limited lifespan. Being flooded for the first time, such a habitat prevents fish from enriching their bodies with a number of trace elements of natural origin.
As an option, such water is salted, but depending on the type of inhabited inhabitants, this is not enough. In the salted state, the medium is enriched with sodium, but does not receive such elements as magnesium, calcium, and others.
And in nature it is from the water that the inhabitants get useful trace elements and other substances.
Preparing water in an aquarium by the method of mixing, it is difficult to guess the necessary proportions. Therefore, the result does not guarantee the required quality and safety.
Whatever water was not decided to fill the water kingdom, before settling its inhabitants it is necessary:
- conduct its organoleptic analysis (color, smell, taste);
- measure its temperature (range should be placed at 22-26 ° C);
- test rigidity using special indicators (litmus paper);
- pass it through a special filter that provides for the removal of mechanical impurities. The presence of this bactericidal component will allow to get rid of the microorganisms present;
- leave outdoors to destroy residual chlorine.
After that, gently drain about three-quarters of the volume, trying not to stir up possible sediment. If taking into account the individual characteristics of fish or plants it is recommended to salt water, salt is first dissolved in half a liter of water (one tablespoon), and then the resulting hypertonic solution can be poured into the aquarium above the sprayer immersed in water.
Salt water should be in accordance with the proportions that are recommended for a particular type of living creatures.
Sometimes, to improve the quality of water at the second stage of water treatment, we pour special softeners, antiseptics, and fresheners into it. What kind of water to pour into the aquarium depends on the live ensemble being created and its biological preferences.
Only by analyzing the recommendations on the content of the selected fish, you can correctly find the answer to the question: what water is needed and how to properly care for it. After all, the well-being and peace of the inhabitants of the water house depend on the kind of water in the aquarium.
