Treatment of fin rot in aquarium fish

Pseudomonas – fin rot, caused by bacteria of the genus Aeromonas or Vibrio Pseudomonas. Aquarists are familiar with this problem, because it is often found among other fish diseases.

If you do not carry out treatment in time, the rot will reach a large scale, which will lead to the death of aquarium inhabitants. The probability of saving the young is quite low even with timely therapy, but in adult fish rot tolerance is higher.

Young aquarium fish tolerate fin rot

The sooner the owner noticed the problem, the easier it will be to fix it. Most often fin rot affects certain species in which the fins are large in size, and at the same time they form folds.

The fish that are located for this disease include:

  • mollies;
  • scalar, cichlid family;
  • betta;
  • voiletail;
  • neon blue, it is neon ordinary;
  • guppy;
  • barbs

Fin rot most often occurs in fish with large fins

Rotting is much less likely to affect aquarium fish with short fins. But individuals who are prone to the disease, after recovery can not always restore the fins to the original form.

They are destroyed, the edge remains uneven and becomes much shorter than it was before. Rays after regrowth have fractures, you can see knots and irregularities on them.

It is useless to treat the inhabitants of the aquarium if the rot has gone far and ulcers appear on the body of the fish.

In the water of the aquarium constantly present bacteria bacteria, they are pathogenic, but it is considered the norm. They do not pose any danger to the inhabitants of the aquarium, as the immunity of the fish is able to resist them. But during adverse conditions, the defenses of the inhabitants can dramatically weaken, or the bacteria quickly begin to multiply.

At such a moment, the situation changes dramatically. Fish cannot protect and resist pathogens of pathology if their number exceeds the norm.

Bar rot fin rot

The following factors can provoke fin rot in fish:

  • The individual experienced severe stress.
  • There are rotting plants in the water.
  • Water temperature is quite low or above normal.
  • The water in the aquarium is not quite clean.
  • The proximity of the fish is wrong: there are aggressive and common species in the same body of water. The first can injure weaker individuals. As a result, wounds appear on the body of the latter, and this is an excellent breeding ground for bacteria.
  • Improper feeding. The fish’s body will lose all its protective functions due to a lack of vitamins and nutrients.

When buying fish in the store, they should be carefully examined to reveal destruction in the fins. If such defects are present, it is not necessary to buy it, because the treatment of pathology is not always successful.

Pathology can be cured only if it is determined in the early stages. When rotting has spread to the body and the fins are completely destroyed, the most correct decision would be to kill the pet, because there is no chance to save it.

The symptoms of fin rot are pronounced, so it is not difficult to diagnose it. With this pathology, the inhabitants of the aquarium observed:

  • Red spots on the fins. These are occluded vessels in which blood circulation stops, so the fin begins to decompose.
  • Cloud opacities.
  • The edges become blue or whitish.
  • Fins on the chest fish are destroyed.

Shabby type of fins – one of the symptoms of the disease

  • Rays become short.
  • The fin on a tail collapses, becomes shabby.
  • In places where there were fins, ulcers appear. In this case, the pathology got to the muscular system, when the treatment no longer makes sense.
  • Eyes become dull.

This disease is quickly transmitted, therefore, in order not to get a chain reaction, new pets need to be kept separate from the fish already in the aquarium for some time. Adhering to such quarantine costs about a week.

Absolutely all aquarists should be able to cope with fin rot. If you recognize the disease immediately, then all measures will be aimed only at replacing 1/3 of water every day for a week, you should also raise its temperature to the maximum allowed.

In case this does not give the desired result, need to resort to drugs. You can carry out treatment of fin rot in the general aquarium.

In the early stages of the disease, fin rot can be cured by daily replacing a third of the water in the aquarium.

Treatment of fin rot with chloramphenicol is applied up to the restoration of the fins. The dose of the drug is 1 tablet per 20 liters of water.

First, the tablet should be crushed into powder and dissolved in 200 ml of water. Then pour this liquid into the aquarium. Once every three days, 1/3 of the water in the reservoir must be replaced by adding a new batch of Levomycetin solution.

You can see improvements in a month.

Copes well with pathology and Streptocid. The drug in pills need to grind, prepare a solution of 10 liters of water and 1.5 g of powder, mix and pour into a container with fish. You can also make a bath for pets.

For its preparation, you need one tablet, which is diluted in 6 liters of water with a temperature of 28 C. Then the “patients” are kept in such a bath for half an hour. Repeat the procedure can be in two days.

Treatment of fin rot in goldfish, as in other species, can be done with salt. It is used for baths.

In three liters of distilled water, you need to dissolve two teaspoons of salt and keep the affected individual in it for 15 minutes. The procedure should be carried out until full recovery once every two days.

Potent antiseptic is hydrogen peroxide.. It has a detrimental effect on the causative agent of rot.

For 15 days it is worth twice a day to pour a teaspoon of peroxide into the aquarium for every 10 liters of water.

Hydrogen peroxide is used only in severe cases of fin rot disease.

For the bath, the peroxide dosage is 1 tablespoon per 10 liters of water. It should be borne in mind that you need to use the bath only if the condition of the pet is severe.

Therapy in this case is carried out once in two days, only five procedures. Improvement is observed in a couple of days.

Potassium permanganate is applied in the proportion of 1 g per 20 liters of water. First, it is diluted in 200 ml of water.

100 ml is poured into the tub, the fish is placed in it, five minutes later the remaining 100 ml are added. After another five minutes, the pet is returned to the aquarium.

The procedure must be repeated twice a day until the fins begin to recover.

Preventive measures – the best tool to combat fin rot

Formalin can also be used to treat rot. The proportion is 1 ml per 6 liters of water.

Bath do every two days. The procedure lasts 15 minutes, but if it is noticed that the fish is bad, you should get it earlier.

It is very important to carry out preventive measures. After all, it is better to constantly take care of pets, than to treat them later.

To prevent decay, it is necessary to change 1/5 of the water in the aquarium once a week, feed the fish with a good quality good food, do not forget about the quarantine for new individuals. Omnivorous fish give bloodworm twice a week, and herbivorous – one.

If therapy is started on time, many pets can be saved.
