The use of methylene blue: how to cure fish and improve water?

An aquarium is not only a mass of pleasure and positive emotions. Sometimes this disease of fish, muddy water, unpleasant smell, unhealthy vegetation. In this case, you can not tighten.

Water home requires prompt response: unscheduled cleaning, disinfection, aeration, recovery.

Aquarium must always maintain a healthy biological balance and a favorable chemical composition. To this end, an aquarist has at his disposal effective pharmacological preparations, characterized by the direction of exposure and having certain indications for use.

Methylene blue – helper for bacteriological problems

In 1876, Heinrich Karo was able to synthesize a substance that triggered the work with phenothiazines. This is eosin methylene blue — dark green crystals with a characteristic reflection of natural bronze.

Possessing high disinfecting properties, which is an antidote for many poisonous compounds, an effective dye, for example, for fabrics – such a substance quickly gained popularity. Today it can be purchased as a powder, so a solution of a given concentration.

At home, the preparation of the solution should be dealt with, knowing the chemical peculiarity of the powder not to dissolve in ethanol, ether and chloroform, to be poorly soluble in water.

Methylene blue and its analogs for an aquarium are a find if:

  • problems with the health of the fish;
  • quality and transparency of water has deteriorated;
  • plants become covered with mucus and turn yellow;
  • algae pests or “black beard” grow;
  • there was a specific putrid and musty smell;
  • It is necessary to use an indicator of the chemical composition of water.

All these problems are caused by one factor – the entry of pathogenic microbes that can make life in an aquarium impossible. Such a process is especially dangerous when the process of breeding in fish begins in an aquarium.

If you liked the video – share with friends:

The methyl structure of the substance allows him to act as a supplier or recipient of hydrogen ions. Such processes contribute to the formation of poorly soluble complex compounds with protein and mucopolysaccharides of viable bacteria. As a result of this chemical reaction, the microorganism dies.

The products of its vital activity no longer stand out in the water, change its natural composition and properties.

At the same time, since it is a dye, the water will acquire a specific beautiful blue color, which is rather unstable. For fish, this is not harmful if stress and psychological disorder are excluded.

That is why during the period of rehabilitation it is better to transplant them. The indicator of fish poisoning is their sudden movements, throwing, or, on the contrary, immobilization and falling asleep.

Possesses the substance, like its counterparts, as well as antiparasitic effects, and also helps to cope with such unwanted guests as the simplest microorganisms.

Deciding to use a composition in which methylene blue plays the main role, it is necessary:

  • know exactly the volume of water to be disinfected;
  • have information about the composition of the selected drug;
  • manufacturer’s instructions for its use.

The package always indicates the recommended working concentration of the substance and the time of its exposure. For example, if it is indicated that in order to effectively treat the inhabitants of the aquarium and the aquatic environment as a whole, it is necessary to add 1 drop of the solution to 2.5 liters of water, then this should be done carefully and accurately.

You can also prepare the solution locally: 4 drops of the drug should be dissolved in 0.5 l of water, and then gradually pour the concentrate into a common (in this case, 10 liter) aquarium. Fill the drug and its analogues is in the area of the dispenser or aerator to ensure uniform distribution.

Attention: if there is a biological or carbon filter in the aquarium, it should be turned off for the period of rehabilitation, as the process of sorption will also affect the components of the medicine.

But, having sustained the necessary exposure, it is convenient to use the filter just to restore the former composition of the water.

In addition, methyl blue is a reliable indicator of chlorates, mercury cations, tin, magnesium, cadmium and other substances whose presence in the water for fish is undesirable.

Methylene blue in overdose can cause negative consequences in humans. These include:

  • deterioration of the general condition;
  • nausea;
  • vomiting;
  • headache;
  • allergic reactions;
  • excited or, on the contrary, depressed state of the nervous system.

Therefore, it is necessary to prepare the working solution carefully, minimally contacting the agent directly.

The indicator of a negative reaction is a rash on the body and a headache.

Despite this, in the West, the drug is often used as a nootrop and is even called nootropic blue.

What are the recommendations for use in aquarium?

Today, the range of evidence to use the tool is quite wide.

Diseases of fish caused by aeromonas, myxobacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, trihodinami, ichthyophthirius and other pathogenic microorganisms, especially gram-positive nature, have typical symptoms. In the event of their manifestation, the rehabilitation with such a solution is an effective and inexpensive way out.

In addition, diseases of aquatic inhabitants can be caused by a shift in the acid balance in the tissues of their body. This is observed, for example, when transporting fish, introducing a new type of feed, especially with antibacterial additives, preparing for spawning and growing caviar.

The presence in the water of the smallest particles of a fungus, mold or a special type of yeast is always a threat to the development of an infectious process. The indicator in such a situation – anxiety of the inhabitants of the water home, loss of appetite, lifestyle changes and others.
