Guppy: what can cause them disease?

Guppies are fish loved by many for their cheerful disposition and uncomplicated content. In an aquarium populated by a flock of guppies, it is always perky and positive.

Beautifully developing tails of males and plump females, more sluggish and calm, as well as a whole crowd of babies scurrying around the perimeter of the aquarium – this is a picture that lovers of such a world observe.

But even in such a positive “society” there are sad moments. For no apparent reason, guppies suddenly die or in the mornings the owner notices that guppies jump out of the aquarium.

If you liked the video – share with friends:

Of course, the reason that a guppy dies can be an elementary biological death. An organism that has outlived its natural resource wears out, grows old and ends up livelihoods.

The life span of healthy individuals is statistically an average of 3-4 years, but more often it is one and a half to two. Another thing is when a young individual swims on its side, which yesterday was cheerful and healthy.

How could she get sick? After all, care has not changed in anything.

The aquarium also has its own problems, leading to diseases of its inhabitants. Knowledge of their causes will allow timely measures to prevent such negative consequences.

When you sit down in the aquarium of new inhabitants, you need to be confident in their health. The initial inspection of the fish will tell a lot. It should not be pretty, too thin or have a faded color.

It’s bad when the guppy swims sideways or stands still. The disease is evidenced by compressed fins and tail, the presence of atypical spots on the body and other defects.

At the same time, visual well-being is not always a guarantee of health. The fact is that the fish may be in the stage when their infection has occurred, but externally has not yet manifested itself (the so-called incubation period).

To protect against this, you can only purchase live goods in stores with a good reputation or from trusted sellers who provide proper care.

With sick fish, bacteria, viruses or fungi can be introduced. They can cause:

  1. Rubella fish. The body is covered with red spots, sometimes turning into ulcers. The scales are destroyed, the subcutaneous layer inflames and swells. The fish can die quickly enough;
  2. Covering the upper part of the fish (near the dorsal fin) and the tail area with white spots. The skin fades, becomes flabby and lifeless. Fins glued and drooping;
  3. Branchiomycosis (rotting in the gills). The fish stops eating, floats to the surface, but does not swallow air. Numerous hemorrhages are possible in the gill area. Breathing is heavy and intermittent. The overall color of the guppy may change to bloody yellow;
  4. Postpartum infection as a result of parasite infestation, for example, tetrachimenus. Females who give birth become weak, sick and quickly die. An infection that has entered their birth canal can affect the fry, depriving the viability.

The etiological factor of the disease may be in plants. For example, helminth lesions.

On the body of the guppy appear clearly visible outgrowths, inside which are the larvae of worms. Growing up, they parasitize on a small fish, taking nutrients necessary for their vital activity.

As a result, the fish – the owners can lose weight, stop jumping and die one by one.

Helminths get into the aquarium together with new plants that have been planted in the ground, already contaminated with growth in the previous aquarium.

You can see that the guppy swims vertically in an aquarium with an overgrown Elodie Canadian (popularly called “water chuoya”). The plant, occupying a significant part of the water space, interferes with the normal life of the fish, creates conditions that are unacceptable for their lifestyle.

Guppies also suffer from the presence of blue-green algae in the water – the so-called unicellular parasites that consume nutrients necessary for guppies to ensure their life.

It is impossible to deny the fact of mechanical injury to fish on the sharp parts of some large plants or their dead parts. As a result of the wounds received, the guppies lose weight, the male does not chase the female, but behaves indifferently and detachedly.

The injured guppy swims vertically, occupies a position that is less traumatic for its body.

In such a case, a careful and careful care should be established for the fish, excluding the secondary infection of wounds by bacteria that have entered the water.

Food intended for fish should also be safe and of high quality. When pathogenic bacteria and viruses enter the aquarium, enteritis can develop with food (in other words, bacterial intestinal damage).

In this case, the skin becomes faded, the fish refuses to eat, hides from the light. Fins acquire filamentous character.

The female quickly loses weight and can die.

Poisoning should be distinguished from the elementary overfeeding. If the amount of food at a time does not correspond to the biological needs of the body of the guppy, and he cannot stop eating, a condition similar to human overeating occurs.

There is bloating, intoxication, deterioration of general health.

That is why “taking care” is not only feeding, but also making sure that the fish eat and what quality it is.

Adverse changes in the internal environment in the aquarium

The answer to the question “Why do guppies float on the surface?” Is the deterioration of the water quality in the aquarium.

Worst of all, the overpopulation of the available volume. As a result, the amount of ammonia and other nitrogenous compounds in water increases. Such substances as chlorine, metal salts, chlorides, phosphates, nitrates, sulfates, as well as calcium, sodium and fluorine can get into the tap water.

If before this water was purified from bacteriological contaminants with special bactericidal preparations, then their residues may remain in significant quantities.

The ingestion of fish of such chemicals, as well as insufficient air exchange leads to general poisoning, the cessation of the main processes of life, seizures. It is possible and the situation when nothing can be done and death occurs.

What to do in such cases? Immediately proceed to the general replacement of water.

Asking the question: “why do guppies die?” You should always analyze: are all the conditions for a favorable existence created?

And if you get a positive response, you can be sure that you will not have to treat your favorite guppies. They will be full of energy, vigor and positive.
