Green scurf in the aquarium: how to deal with greens, get rid of what to do, clean up, remove points on the walls, decorations

Newbies in aquarism confuse algae with plants, although the difference between these concepts is enormous. Higher plants decorate the aquarium and create the necessary conditions for living fish.

Algae are weed organisms that infect higher plants and, in some cases, aquarium fish. Many aquarists are faced with the appearance of green bloom on glass, soil and scenery.

Unwanted greens in the aquarium spoils the impression of the underwater world.

Signs of ecosystem disturbance:

  • turbidity of water;
  • discoloration of the liquid to green and brown;
  • the scenery, the surface of the water and the ground are covered with a green film or patina;
  • high content of phosphorus and nitrates;
  • abundant appearance of green bloom in the aquarium.
  • Flying in small quantities is considered normal. Do not be alarmed by noticing a few green dots in the aquarium.

    Observe the flora, if the glass is greener and the water is dimmed, this should be a concern.

    To clean the aquarium you need cleaning supplies:

  • scraper;
  • siphon;
  • sponges;
  • bucket to drain the water.
  • Clean up the aquarium once a week. Cleaning is carried out in 8 stages:

  • Set aside the fish and other fauna.
  • Clean the inside of the aquarium, scrape the entire length of the bloom.
  • Drain some of the water with the remaining algae in the bucket.
  • Clean the soil with a siphon.
  • Remove the scenery and stones, carefully clean the green.
  • Wash the internal parts of the equipment with water taken from the vessel.
  • Top up with settled water.
  • Wipe the tank outside.
  • The use of cleansing drugs – an extreme measure. First of all, change the habitat conditions of the inhabitants of the aquarium:

  • Reduce daylight hours to 10 hours per day.
  • Do not allow direct sunlight on the pond. Place the aquarium at least 1.5 meters from the window.
  • Increase pH. Alkaline water harms weeds. Be careful, changing the parameters of water, they must remain suitable for aquarium inhabitants.
  • Regularly replace 15–20% of the volume of water, clean the walls and soil of the aquarium.
  • Plant a large number of plants in the tank. Higher flora prevents the formation of weeds.
  • Take care of fertilizer in the soil.
  • Strengthen filtration and aeration.
  • Replace bulbs if required. Some lamps, dimming, change the spectrum of the glow. Improperly selected lighting destroys higher plants, promoting weed reproduction.
  • The method is not suitable for all aquariums: leave the vessel for three weeks, during this time the green algae breeding cycle takes place, after which the cells die off, and the water becomes transparent. Remember that during the development of green algae plants are dying.
  • Settlement fish and snails into the pond.
  • Inhabitants to help fight airborne:

  • ampoule;
  • neretina horned;
  • Theodoxus;
  • antsistrus;
  • corridor fish;
  • Labo two-color;
  • Siamese Algae Fish;
  • amano shrimp;
  • cherry shrimps;
  • daphnia;
  • cyclops
  • The appearance of the plaque is caused by the incorrect maintenance of the aquarium and the violation of its biological environment. Algae, creating a green patina on the walls of the aquarium:

    • euglena green;
    • xenococcus;
    • nitric acid of edogonium.

    Elevated temperatures have a beneficial effect on the development of weeds. Watch that the lamp does not warm the water very much, and in the warm season be especially attentive to the temperature conditions.

    In warm water, oxygen spreads worse, chemical reactions proceed faster, stimulating the release of nitrates into the water. These substances are food for green weeds.

    Avoid sunlight on the vessel wall. The quantity and spectrum of light plays a role.

    In summer, the daylight hours do not exceed 12 hours, in winter – 7. The walls of the aquarium turn green from the intense light of the yellow spectrum.

    Uncooled fodder becomes food for lower greens. Remove excess feed with a siphon or net.

    Together with uneaten food, waste creates conditions for the reproduction of green algae and poison the water with ammonia and nitrates.

    Causes of green plaque also appear:

  • Propagation of weeds in glass microcracks. Clean the tank carefully, there is a chance that the algae particles remain in barely noticeable damage to the glass.
  • Excess fertilizer. A bloom of greenery appears if the nutrients are more than the higher flora absorbs.
  • Lack of fertilizer. With insufficient nutrition, plants grow poorly and look dull.
  • Additional means are:

  • Zeolite is a resin that removes water from harmful chemicals formed in the soil.
  • Various drugs that increase the population of good bacteria and biostarter (Tetra SafeStart, NitrateMinus Pearls).
  • Special preparations to combat the greening of the walls and prevent the appearance of greenery. The name of such drugs is the word Algo, meaning alga (Tetra AlgoStop depot, Algetten, Sera Algopur).
  • Copper sulphate. Not introduced into the tank due to toxicity. In a solution of copper sulfate 0.2 mg per liter of water, the plants are kept no more than two hours. The tool is also intended to combat parasites.
  • Chlorine and bleach. The solution is easy to prepare at home: the product is diluted with water in the ratio of 1:20, the exposure time of 3-5 minutes.
  • To maintain the pond biobalance and proper cleaning, follow the recommendations:

    • Do not use kitchen sponges or scrapers to clean the aquarium, which interacted with detergents. Residues are dangerous to fish.
    • If it is not possible to turn the aquarium light on and off at a certain time, a time relay that automates the changing of day and night in the aquarium comes to the rescue.
    • Metal scrapers and blades are best not to use, as they leave scratches on the walls of the aquarium. Instead of a scraper, use a plastic card and thin wooden paddles.
    • If you can not get rid of plaque on the stones and scenery, hold them in the bleach for 15 minutes, then pour over boiling water.
    • Avoid soil contamination due to overfeeding fish. Filled food is eaten in 5 minutes.

    Under natural conditions, the water is saturated with green algae. Aquatic inhabitants eat lower plants. For herbivorous fish, greens are the basis of the diet, for others it is a necessary supplement.

    Small crustacean algae serve as a habitat.
