Film on the surface of the water: is it harmful to the inhabitants of the aquarium?

The aquatic environment is not only a favorable neighborhood of fish, plants, amphibians and gastropods. Moisture and heat retain and multiply many bacteria and protozoa. There they feel comfortable and calm.

Especially, if there are food debris and organic waste in the water.

The presence of such microflora causes the formation of a specific film on the surface of the water.

Looking at the surface of the water intently and attentively, sometimes it is possible to notice as if its state was frozen. At the same time, barely noticeable rainbow stains (as if gasoline-containing substances hit the water) or whitish coloration, like a thick web, are possible.

The nature of this phenomenon is the result of the accumulation of surfactants of organic and inorganic nature on the surface. These signs are especially noticeable if there is no intensive aeration in the aquarium, and the upper layers of the water remain stationary.,

The film on the water in the aquarium is an obstacle for metabolic processes between water and air. As a result, the course of redox reactions is disturbed, which leads to excessive acidification or, on the contrary, alkalization of water. For individual fish species, this state of the aquatic environment is a risk factor for the development of diseases and is destructive.

Aquatic inhabitants become lethargic, inactive, lose their biological characteristics.

A shift in acid-base balance affects the state of vegetation. The formation of carbon dioxide slows down its growth, can negatively affect the intensity of color. On particularly sensitive plant species, the leaves turn yellow, curl up into a tube and turn away.

Flowering species cease to form flowers and thin.

The aquarium water as a whole acquires a specific putrid odor, becomes slightly soapy to the touch, and when bubbles are transfused it may form.

In addition, the formation of brown-yellow bloom on the walls of the aquarium, individual stones and design elements is activated.

Often a parallel sign, when the film was formed in the aquarium, is the proliferation of black beard – algae, which quickly and densely grows around leaves, shells, underwater snails, soil.

If you classify the reasons for the formation of the film, you get something like the following:

Most often the film coating appears as a result of the vital activity of microbes. Intensively absorbing oxygen, they grow, multiply and activate the putrefactive processes inside the aquarium.

More often, these are colonies of unicellular microorganisms, the coccal form of bacteria, and sometimes protozoa.

In second place is relevance – the film arising in new aquariums or after their repair. Low-quality products (glue, sealant, paints, degreasers, air fresheners, and others) often contain water-soluble elements that initially do not manifest their negative effect.

But over time, their number increases, the accumulation processes lead to accumulation on the surface of such compounds. Especially often it happens when using nitrate means.

Another group of reasons – oily formulations for putty cracks and seams. In this case, the film is slippery to the touch, dense and difficult to remove.

Starting to remove the film, it should be clearly stated that its presence is the result of pathological processes occurring inside an artificial reservoir. Therefore, the main goal should be the improvement of the aquatic environment.

Collecting the film from the surface of the aquarium is a cosmetic measure that does not carry fundamental changes.

You can collect the film using blotting paper, a thick cloth or a cloth with good moisture absorption. On such a structure, the elements of the water film attract, stick and can be simply removed.
