Diseases of a goldfish: swims up belly, lies on the bottom, scales fall off, the tail has peeled off, floats, fins grow, swims on its side, lies on the bottom, breathes heavily, fin rot, blackened edges, covered with red spots

Diseases of goldfish are accompanied by the same symptoms as other aquarium fish. The article presents common signs of disease and treatment methods. If you are unsure of the diagnosis, do not rush in to introduce medication.

First, check the water and normalize the conditions of detention.

The fish is alive and breathing rapidly, and the belly increases in size. If a goldfish swims belly up, then the animal is prone to obesity and vulnerable to infections that cause swim bladder problems. Reasons for swimming fish on the back:

  • Monotonous food.
  • Binge eating. Pour food 1-2 times a day with pinches that pets can handle in a couple of minutes. Remove leftovers immediately. If the fish systematically overeat, go on a hunger strike for 3 days, then feed on green peas without skin.
  • Excess protein feed. Herbivorous goldfish. The food system of carp does not cleave animal proteins. Feed your pets a balanced goldfish feed, sometimes serve scalded lettuce leaves, peas, broccoli or cucumbers. Live and frozen feed make up 20–30% of the diet, vegetable – 70–80%.
  • Dropsy – common in gold carp disease. Characterized by swelling, due to which the pet turns the belly up. Check the water parameters and the amount of nitrites, change the liquid if necessary and change the parameters. Replant a sick individual in a separate aquarium. Mix chloramphenicol with feed (250 mg per 25 g of feed) or dissolve the antibiotic in water (10 mg per 1 l).
  • Disease. Set aside a sick pet. Check the concentration of nitrite and ammonia, inspect the animal. Find out why a goldfish swims unnaturally. Swimming belly up – one of the signs of mycobacteriosis (tuberculosis). Other signs: swelling of the abdomen, floating near the surface, bug-eyed, curvature of the spine, tarnishing of the color, desire to hide. Symptoms appear in different combinations. The disease is rarely treatable. Change water daily for 2 weeks, add kanamycin (30 mg per 1 l).
  • Goldfish lie at the bottom of the aquarium for various reasons:

  • Stress. Recently acquired goldfish is not accustomed to a new aquarium, lying or hiding among shelters. Watch your pet for a couple of days. The situation will not change in case of illness. Make sure there are no constant sources of stress in the aquarium in the form of overpopulation or pugnacious neighbors.
  • Lack of free space. The golden carp must be in an aquarium with a volume of at least 40–50 L, depending on the specific species.
  • Poisoning. Rare water changes and filter malfunctioning cause contamination.
  • Heat. Goldfish comfortable at 18-22 degrees. If there is no thermometer, purchase one. The result with less error is shown by glass thermometers and electronic ones.
  • Alkalosis or acidosis – diseases caused by inappropriate pH. Goldfish contain at pH 6-8. If the parameters do not match, smoothly align them to acceptable values. Other signs of these diseases are: bulging fins, convulsions, impaired coordination, restless behavior, discoloration of the color.
  • Injuries caused by unfriendly neighbors.
  • Ichthyophthyriosis (“semolina” or “disease of white spots”). Other signs: a goldfish itches about objects in an aquarium, loses appetite, becomes lethargic, hides, quickens breathing, white grains are visible on the body. Treat the goldfish with malachite green pet-based products in accordance with the instructions. An alternative is biomitsin (1.4 g per 100 liters). Bring 1-2 times a week, increasing the aeration.
  • Mycobacteriosis

    Change of color – a natural phenomenon for goldfish up to 2 years. With a decrease in temperature, pets become paler.

    The color is also affected by the shade of the soil, the white soil leads to the natural lightening of the color. Strange behavior and blanching caused by disease and improper content:

  • Ichthyophthyriosis.
  • Not enough nutritional food.
  • “Cotton Disease”. The animal behaves restlessly, itches, a raid or growths resembling cotton wool appear on the body. Eliminate stress sources, check water parameters. Use products containing phenoxyethanol.
  • Kostioz. Accompanied by loss of appetite, itching, and the appearance of white or gray patches. Filed with infected individuals and live food. Treat with copper sulphate (1 g per 10 l), place the goldfish in the solution for 10 min. Repeat the procedure for 5 days. Acceptable treatment with salt. Immerse the goldfish in the tub (25 g per 10 liters) for 15 minutes. in a week.
  • Damage to the tail indicates disease:

  • Fin rot. Goldfish appear red streaks, the edges are reduced, fins may turn black. Place the golden carp in a salt water bath (1 tsp. Per 3 liter) for half an hour. Perform the procedure once a day for a couple of weeks. Effective use of drugs based on malachite greens and methylene blue.
  • Flexibacteriosis (columnaria). Appears in dirty and too warm water. Treatment can be the initial stage of the disease. In addition to discoloration of the tail, followed by destruction, there is ruffling of the scales in the tail section, blanching of the edges of the scales, clarification of the mouth area and stiffness of movements. Immerse the goldfish in the bath with a pink solution of potassium permanganate for 10–15 minutes for 3–5 days. You can use chloramphenicol (50 mg per 3 liters), adding every other day for a week. After that, add kanamycin (1 g per 20 l) in a similar pattern.
  • Goldfish scales fall off as a result of:

  • Excess nitrite. Change the water and add air conditioning.
  • Neighborhood with catfish. Soma sticks damage scales. Sometimes the problem is solved by increasing the amount of plant food, but it is better to plant pets.
  • Lepidorthosis. In some areas of the body rises and falls scales. The disease is recorded with aquarium animals that have not been quarantined and ground from natural reservoirs. Treat carps with biomycin (1.4 g per 100 l) by adding the solution weekly for a month. You can use the bath with the main purple. Prepare a stock solution (100 mg per 1 l), dilute 10-15 ml of the solution obtained in 10 l of water. Place the diseased individual in the solution for 4 days.
  • Ichthyosporidiosis. The disease is indicated by intermittent swimming, convulsions, lying on the bottom on the side, heavy breathing, bug-eyed, loss of scales and bruises. The disease is difficult to treat. Dilute phenoxitol in water in a ratio of 1: 100. Pour the resulting solution into the aquarium (10–20 ml of solution per liter) for 2 weeks.
  • Tuberculosis. In gold carp, a sign of mycobacteriosis is the loss of scales without hairs.
  • Incorrectly chosen neighbors bite the fins of goldfish. Voile varieties are particularly susceptible to this.

    Injuries are caused by barbs, cichlids, cockerels and thorns. With minor injuries, the tail recovers quickly. At this time, pay increased attention to the injured, since the contamination of water may develop a fungal infection in the injured area.

    If the tail or fin is bitten off to the ground, they will not grow back.

    If a goldfish swims on its side or up belly, but is alive and breathing, this indicates problems with the swim bladder. Review the diet and check the water, inspect the skin and fins.

    Perhaps a goldfish has an infectious disease.

    Darkening of the fins caused by:

  • Poisoning with nitrogenous compounds. The body is covered with black spots, the animal breathes rapidly and keeps near the surface. Strengthen aeration and substitute up to 30% water. It will help the introduction of air conditioners that neutralize harmful compounds. Restart the aquarium. If there are few or no plants in the aquarium, plant them. The soil layer must be at least 5 cm.
  • Fin rot.
  • There are breeds of gold fish with a “cap” on the head (oranda, little red cap, pearl with a crown). An eruption appears in 3-4 months, sometimes unexpectedly for an aquarist. If you have a different breed of golden carp, the formation on the head is caused by:

  • The appearance of a tumor. The treatment can not be, but under good conditions, the animal will live a long time.
  • Trauma.
  • Inappropriate conditions.
  • Causes of red spots:

  • Rubella is the collective name for spring viremia of carp, aeromonosis, pseudomonosis and vibriosis – diseases with similar manifestations. Accompanied by hemorrhages, especially in the head area. Other signs: the appearance of ulcers, bulging eyes, swelling of the abdomen. Treat in a separate container. It will take leukocyte human interferon (1 ampoule per 35 liters) in combination with levomycetin (2.5 g per 100 liters). Bring in a day to improve. Replace a third of the water at least 1-2 times a week. Chloramphenicol (250 mg per 25 g of feed) or furazolidone (0.5 g per 25 g of feed) also helps. Feed the mixture for 6 days. During treatment, provide continuous aeration.
  • Skin and gill trematodes. Animals behave restlessly, try to scratch themselves on objects, fins are often pressed, red spots appear on the body, skin is covered with mucus. Treat with special anti-parasite products or using potassium permanganate baths.
  • Ammonia poisoning.
  • Scabby eyes and the appearance of whitish plaque on the eyes accompany the disease:

  • ichthyosporidiosis;
  • rubella;
  • tuberculosis.
  • Inspect the skin and fins, observe the behavior of the inhabitants of the aquarium. Check the water parameters.

    A change in one eye usually indicates an injury.

    Responsible for cleaning the aquarium. You should know the parameters of water and check its tests.

    If the goldfish has died, immediately remove the dead pet from the tank and inspect the other inhabitants of the aquarium. Before you start a fish, get acquainted with the features of running the reservoir, feeding, compatibility and maintenance of the aquarium. Goldfish die for the following reasons:

  • water pollution;
  • inappropriate conditions;
  • no quarantine for new fish;
  • neglect of processing feed and plants;
  • overfeeding
  • Remember that goldfish are not suitable for small tanks, they need clean water and plenty of free space. Beginners wishing to have a small aquarium can place guppies or game fish in it.
