Determination of the disease in guppies by external signs and treatment

People often get the fish as pets. The contents of the aquarium, resembling the seabed, has a relaxing and pacifying effect on the person. Guppies become frequent inhabitants of the domestic pond.

Attractive fish are still popular in aquarism. But even these little pets need proper care.

Beginners should learn more about guppy diseases and their treatment so that the fish live with them for a long time.

Guppies – frequent inhabitants of home aquariums

Improper conditions of detention can cause various diseases in water pets. Sometimes it is difficult to identify the exact cause of a disease.

Guppies often have scoliosis. This problem appears for several reasons:

The spine arches down. This is due to overeating, which puts a strain on the back.

Sick fish reduce portions of food. If it is in the general aquarium, you must ensure that it does not take food from other inhabitants.

Curvature of the spine is not only in adult fish, but also in fry

  • The spine arches to the side. Scoliosis can be not only in adults, but also in fry. Curvature of the spine occurs due to overcrowding of fish in the tank or increased water hardness. In fry, it may arch due to injury after birth.
  • To avoid a hump on the back of a guppy, you need to follow the diet of the fish, in which you need to include live food and vitamins. At the same time it can not be overfed.

For the kids in the tank, they plant a lot of algae, which contribute to their physical activity.

Guppies are known for their bright and luxurious fins. These parts of the body are especially sensitive to the microclimate in an artificial reservoir and are often affected by various diseases. Even the slightest changes in the fins can be signs of disease:

      Red scab.

Called unicellular parasites tetrahimeni. It is characterized by bright red spots or stripes appearing on the fins and tail, and the subsequent splitting of the limbs.

At the first signs of a red scab in guppies, treatment begins with the fact that the fish is deposited from their relatives in another container. Using disinfected blades, cut off the damaged parts.

Then the guppy is placed in saline.

The red scab is characterized by bright red spots on the tail.

  • Squeezing fins. It occurs due to insufficient amount of nutrients in the body. Most often observed in young individuals. In this disease, the fins are glued together or flattened in a horizontal direction. Affected fish should vary the diet by adding live food to it. Every day salt is added to the water in the proportion of 1 g per liter. The liquid in the aquarium will have to be updated daily at 30−40% of the total.
  • Finning. Usually the problem is with the tail. It splits into two or more parts if there is not enough vitamin D in the body of the fish. For each liter of water in the tank, 1 ml of iodine is added. The fins can split into pieces and in guppy fights with other kinds of fish. Incorrectly chosen neighbors should be resettled in different aquariums.
  • The fade rot develops due to the appearance of bacteria

  • Fin rot. A dangerous disease develops due to the violation of conditions of detention and infection by bacteria. It is usually observed in male guppies. On the fins appear cloudy spots, which are converted into ulcers, releasing pus. If you do not begin to treat guppies, the fish will die. Infected individuals are treated with antibacterial drugs and antibiotics. Positive results are observed after the use of salt baths, in which the fish should be kept for 10−15 minutes. In the general aquarium they disinfect: the soil and decorative elements are boiled, and the algae are washed under running water.

Tails in fish can take on a shabby look. Such changes are due to the rare replacement of water in the reservoir, a large number of underwater inhabitants or fights with aggressive neighbors. So that the fins do not deteriorate anymore, the damaged parts are carefully cut with a sharp knife.

If a new larger tank has no effect on the behavior of pets, then different species should be resettled in different aquariums.

Some aquarists breed their fish to enrich the artificial reservoir with bright inhabitants. But this is sometimes hampered by some problems.

Females of guppies can suffer from infertility, which can be a congenital disease or the result of bright and long-lasting illumination in the tank. The second reason is easier to understand. Infertility in the female is determined by the intensity of her color, which has decreased due to incorrect conditions.

Return the brightness of the color will, if you reduce the fish daylight hours to 11−12 hours and reduce the power of the lamps.

    Guppies can be infertile

Some individuals show hermaphrodism. Outwardly, it is difficult to diagnose. Violation is characterized by the fact that female genital organs are formed in the female, while the fish can self-fertilize.

Males born with hermaphrodites are sterile.

Unfortunately, there are diseases that can lead to the death of fish. Mycobacteriosis and plistophorosis in guppies cannot be cured.

Fish can extend life for some time, but you need to come to terms with their early departure.

    Guppies have incurable diseases.

Mycobacteriosis is also called fish tuberculosis. It is dangerous for all underwater inhabitants.

The development of an infectious disease is promoted by mycobacteria, which affect the internal organs of the guppy. An individual infected with fish tuberculosis is characterized by lethargy, lack of appetite and a belly that is rapidly decreasing in size. The guppy eyes become bulging and black, and the ridge is bent.

Suffering fish can be a little easier with the help of medicines, but to restore the affected internal organs and depleted body will not work.

Sometimes aquatic pets affects plistophorosis. A rare disease is inherited.

Even experienced aquarists cannot give exact information about the causes of its occurrence. In the presence of plastoforosis fish swims upright. Her appetite decreases, her color fades and her motor activity decreases.

Sick fish can not be cured.

If a guppy develops symptoms of mycobacteriosis or plysteophorosis, it should be immediately removed from healthy individuals. Aquarium, soil and decor should be disinfected, and the plants thoroughly washed.

The inhabitants of artificial water bodies often infect various bacteria and unicellular parasites, since their owners do not always comply with the conditions of proper maintenance. This or that kind of feed also affects the health of the fish.

    Common fish diseases:

Ascites (dropsy). The reason for intestinal infection may be a viral infection or changes in the aquatic environment.

Guppies can become sick with dropsy due to overeating, a monotonous diet, or a rare cleaning of the aquarium. With ascites, the abdomen is swollen in the pet, the scales bristle and fall, and the eyes become bulging.

Fishes become less active and often hide at the bottom of the tank. Affected individuals are treated with antibacterial agents.

It is necessary to regularly change the water in the tank and dilute the diet of fish with different products.

Water drops in guppies are treated with antibiotics and proper nutrition.

  • Hexamitosis (spironculosis). Guppies can infect parasites with flagellates. They live in the intestines and gall bladder, where they form cysts. A sick individual begins to lose weight and hide from its neighbors. Her fins are destroyed, her anus is swollen and red, and her feces come out with mucus. If you start the disease, then wounds and ulcers will appear on the body. At the first symptoms, the water in the tank is heated to 34-36 degrees. If there are no positive results, then it will be necessary to treat the fish with veterinary drugs.
  • Ichthyophthiriosis. The causative agent of the infectious disease is ciliary ciliates Ichthyophthirvus multifiliis. Ichthyophthiriosis, dangerous for all underwater pets, is characterized by a fine white rash and severe itching. Sick individuals scratched the affected areas on the stones and other details in the aquarium. Over time, their bodies appear sores. You can get rid of ichthyophthiriosis with saline. Fish medications are treated with biomycin and tripoflavin.
  • Ichthyophthyriosis is characterized by white spots.

  • Columnaria. The disease is caused by the rod-shaped bacterium Flexibacter columnaris. Parasites appear due to overpopulation of the aquarium, violations of water purification, soil and decorative elements. In fish with this disease the fins stick together, the physical activity decreases. The body, gills and fins are covered with mucous spots of gray tint, increasing in size. Wounds may appear. Guppies are treated with antibacterial agents and antibiotics.
  • Trikhodiniosis. In the body of the fish affected by this disease, the trichodinides parasitize. They appear due to improper feeding of fish, violation of alkaline balance of water or poor aeration. The whole body of the guppy is covered with gray spots of mucus. A sick individual is observed: itching, loss of brightness of colors, lack of appetite and exhaustion. Cure fish succeed with drugs containing oxalate malachite greens. In the aquarium it is necessary to normalize the performance of the aquatic environment. Also for water pets should change the diet.

Having noticed the external signs of the disease, the treatment of guppies begins with the fact that the affected individuals are deposited in a separate container. In the early stages of the fish can always be brought back to normal.

Therefore, aquarium pets should be monitored daily in time to notice the first symptoms.

When several fish or whole flocks are colonized by an aquarium, it is recommended to remove the diseased individuals from the healthy ones so that they do not infect them. There are no universal methods for treating all ailments, but there are measures that can be taken as first aid.

They should know anyone who has decided to acquire aquarium pets.

It is advisable to discard sick fish separately.

Actions taken in the treatment of sick guppies:

    • For a sick individual, a separate reservoir is selected in which it will be more convenient to process it with drugs.
    • A bank or other container with a volume of 2 liters is suitable as a bailout. Fill the tank with water, which is taken from the general aquarium and mixed with fresh.
    • Update fluid should be every day. You can do without a device for aeration.
    • Treat the diseased fish in saline. 1 g of salt is used per liter of water. Also add a few drops of iodine. Updating the fluid in the tank, the concentration of the necessary substances should be resumed.
    • Sick fish should be given live food as it is more nutritious. Such food will help your pet recover faster.
    • Since there is not enough water in the blender, the uneaten food must be cleaned immediately so that the liquid does not become contaminated.

These measures will prevent the spread of infection in the general aquarium, as well as help in the treatment of simple problems. In case of severe diseases, the fish will need to be treated with special preparations that can be found in veterinary pharmacies.

Guppies are loved by aquarists for their beautiful appearance and unpretentious care. If there is a desire to populate an artificial reservoir with bright fish, it should be noted that they are also susceptible to diseases.

If new inhabitants sit in the water, you need to be confident in their health. When buying pets, they should be carefully examined: guppies should not be dull, thin or faded in color.

If the fish swims sideways or keeps in one place, it should not be acquired. Compressed or frayed fins, atypical spots and other defects indicate the disease of aquatic inhabitants.
But not always a good appearance suggests that the fish is completely healthy. There are such diseases that outwardly manifest only through time.

To protect themselves from the sad consequences, guppies should be purchased only in trusted stores, where they are kept in good conditions.
