Common aquarium fish diseases: symptoms and treatment

Aquarium fish also get sick, and the sooner you recognize the disturbing symptoms and start treatment, the more likely the inhabitants of the aquarium survive. Let’s talk about the most common diseases and how to treat them.

The first symptoms – eyes swell, begin to speak for the orbit, and later become cloudy. Behind the eye accumulates fluid, which “squeezes” them out.

If the disease is not treated, the fish may lose their eyes. There are several causes of the disease – infection or poor quality water, insufficiently nutritious food, ocular nematodes.

Sometimes bug-eyed is not a disease, but a symptom (for example, dropsy), so the treatment is carried out after performing water tests. Fish should be planted in another tank, sanitized the aquarium and filled with clean water, water replacement every 3 days is required.

If the reason is in the diet, you need to give mineral supplements. A week later, the tumor passes, and the fish again becomes healthy.

Manifested by the appearance of spots or plaque on the fins, the fish behave sluggishly, they can refuse food, gradually rot affects all the fins and gills, the work of the internal organs is disturbed, the fish die.

To combat saprolenia, you can make manganese or salt baths, lubricate the affected areas with penicillin, keep the fish in a solution of malachite greenery for an hour (10 liters 50 mg). Also known are such drugs as Antibac, Fiosepit, copper sulfate, Tetra Generaltonic, Sera baktopur, Fungus Cure and others.

The carrier of the disease is a flagellate – it can be brought into the aquarium with water, plants or live food. Flagellates parasitic in the stomach of fish, disrupts the digestive system, depletes the individual.

The fish have small ulcers on the head and body, their scales darken, they refuse to feed, and the excrement has the appearance of white threads.

Hexamitosis is treated with calomel (it is added to the feed at the rate of 0.5 g per 250 g of feed), baths with erythrocycline and griseofulvin. You can add sera Fishtamin, Ihtiovit, ZMF Hexa-ex, sera bakto to feed.

The fish behaves apathetically, sluggishly, lies on the ground, the abdominal cavity swells, the anus is inflamed, the scales begin to puff up, and there is a glazing. The abundance of fluid causes swelling, the fish die from hemorrhage.

Antibacterial drugs such as oxytetracycline, chloramphenicol, sera Costapur, sera Bactopur, Furan-2, Triple are added to the feed, you can make trays with chloro mycetin. Patients should be transplanted from the aquarium, and the tank should be thoroughly disinfected, replaced with soil.

The causative agents of the disease are ichthyophthirias – ciliates-parasites that feed on the skin of fish. As a result, small dots appear on the body, similar to beads. The disease quickly spreads through the aquarium, so treatment should begin as early as possible.

Fishes rub against a ground, do not eat, are very shy.

The easiest way is to add malachite green to water, but it is not suitable for labo and combat. Fiosept, furazolidone, sera Bactopur, Nala-Gram, Antibac, Diprovan, sera Omnisan is also used for the treatment.

Sick fish to quarantine, raise the temperature of the water, regularly clean the aquarium.

There are several forms of this disease: acute, fulminant and chronic. The fulminant can be almost asymptomatic and ends in fish death.

In the acute form, the skin of the fish is darker, reddish spots appear on the fins and abdomen, the excrement is mucous, with blood admixture. Later, the fish stops moving, it has a bug-eyed, clearly expressed boils, the gills turn pale.

It is necessary to increase the temperature of the water, antibiotics are added to the aquarium – Biomitsin, Antibac, Ihtiovit, TetraMedica, Furan-2, Sera bactopur, white Streptocid, Tetracycline, Aureomycin. Plants, soil, inventory must be disinfected.

The causative agent is an amoebic parasite that settles in the muscle tissue of fish. The fungus propagates through spores, so the disease spreads quickly.

The fish stop feeding, their emaciation begins, their skin turns pale, whitish or gray spots can be seen under the skin. Parasites destroy muscular tissue, so fish often have impaired coordination of movement, fins are glued together.

Infected individuals die, because there is no effective cure for plystophorosis.

The aquarium should be disinfected with chloramine or potassium permanganate, boiled or calcined primer on the fire, the plants will have to be thrown away, and the sick fish destroyed.

Tuberculosis is often transported by river fish and live food. Fish that become sick with tuberculosis, behave passively, they have a retarded reaction, they often lie on the bottom or become clogged in the corners of the reservoir.

Also, the appearance of the fish begins to change: the abdomen sags, the scales fall out, the abdomen increases, sores appear, the color fades. Sometimes bug-eyedness is observed, eyes grow turbid, fish swim as if making leaps, refuse food.

After the diagnosis is established, the fish should be treated in a jar by adding antibiotics to the water and feed: Ihtiovit, Antibac Pro, Kanamycin, Rifampicin, Vetom immunomodulator. The temperature of the water is raised to the maximum, the aquarium is disinfected.

Its pathogen is flagella bacterium, which is parasitic on the skin of fish. On the body, abscesses are formed in the form of dark spots and boils, the skin and eyes become inflamed, the abdomen may increase, red spots appear on the fins, then bleeding ulcers, which the infection easily penetrates.

The disease is best treated at the initial stage. Streptocid (per 10 liters, 1.5 grams), bicillin-5 (per 100 liters, 500,000 units) can be added to the aquarium water; Fiosept, Trypaflavin, Furan-2, Sera bactopur, TetraMedica, Antibac, Ihtiovit can be added.

The treatment is best done in the general aquarium, since other fish can also easily become infected.

It is caused by parasites – skin worms. On the fins of sick fish mucus appears, the scales darken, there are traces of erosion and ulcers, the fins are damaged.

The fish rubs against the bottom or floats near the surface of the water, the gills turn pale.

For the treatment of gyrodactylosis, universal preparations are used – Fiozept, Formamed, Antipar, Ihtiovit, Diprovan, copper sulfate, Sera Mycopur, Sera Med, General Cure and others. It is better to treat the fish in the general aquarium, since the helminths are transferred from the sick individual to the healthy one.
