All about the treatment of laryngitis in children
In view of the unformed immune system, children suffer from cold and viral diseases much more often than adults. Usually, ARVI is accompanied by a lesion of the oropharynx and respiratory organs, one of which is laryngitis. Parents should know how to distinguish this pathology from other forms of respiratory infections and which treatment method to choose.
Laryngitis is an inflammation of the larynx affecting the vocal cords. The disease is accompanied by a sensation of perspiration in the throat, a cough (at first dry and then wet or barking), a change in the voice, a pain when swallowing, an increase in body temperature. Most often, laryngitis appears due to ARVI or other infectious diseases (measles, scarlet fever, whooping cough). The development of the disease contributes to cold air and the inhalation of cigarette smoke. Sometimes pathology can be caused by non-infectious causes, for example, ingestion of a foreign body into the larynx or overstraining of the vocal cords.
Speaking of this disease, you can hear other names:
- Laryngotracheitis, in which the inflammatory process extends not only to the larynx, but also to the trachea;
- false croup (or stenosing laryngitis), which implies narrowing of the larynx until serious problems with breathing.
The term laryngitis comes from the Greek word, which in translation means the larynx.
Acute and chronic, catarrhal, phlegmonous, backbone and other types of disease
Isolate the acute and chronic forms of laryngitis, each of which, in turn, can be divided into species.
In the case of chronic hypertrophic laryngitis, when the treatment prescribed by the doctor does not help, and the edema and inflammation of the vocal cords does not decrease or progress, resort to surgical intervention. Excessively expanded tissue is removed under the control of a special device of a video camera with a scalpel or laser.
Surgical treatment may also be necessary for phlegmonous laryngitis at the stage of the ulcer, which is opened with a parallel removal of dead tissue. The operation is performed, gaining access to the larynx through the mouth or through a cut on the neck.
The first emergency aid for a baby with a false croup (stenosing laryngitis)
If a child has an attack of croup, then it is necessary to call an ambulance as soon as possible. While waiting for the doctor's arrival, there are two ways to ease the baby's condition, to keep him from suffocation, thus avoiding serious complications.
- Reducing the temperature of the air that the child breathes. In the cold season, the baby should be warmly dressed and carried out on the street or balcony. In the summer, you can cope with the attack if you go into the bathroom and open a tap with cold water. Cool air and high humidity will have a beneficial effect on the condition of the larynx, weaken or completely eliminate the difficulty in breathing.
Before the arrival of the doctor, parents should provide first aid to the child
- Attempt to call a vomiting reflex. For this, a clean spoon or other non-sharp object should touch the back wall of the pharynx.
