The use of antibiotics in otitis in children: is it justified?

Antibiotics in the treatment of otitis in children: what can a doctor prescribe?

Inflammatory process in the ear of the baby causes great concern of his parents. And this anxiety is justified: an incompletely cured infection can cause a complete loss of hearing and make a crumb disabled for life. Otitis in children should be treated necessarily, but is it always necessary and justified to use heavy artillery when treated in the form of antibiotics?

Before wringing your hands, seeing the list of pills prescribed by a doctor, it is worthwhile to figure out which diagnosis the baby has been given. Our ear consists of three parts – external, middle and inner, and inflammation can occur in any of these departments.

  • Inflammation of the external ear. Otitis externa is usually caused by infection in the wound on the surface of the auricle or in the ear canal. Another reason may be ripening of the furuncle in the sebaceous glands of the external ear.

In any case, the wound fester, causes itching and discomfort. With this diagnosis, antibacterial therapy is not prescribed. Usually, the doctor prescribes regular ear lavage, cauterization of sores in their presence and lubrication of infected areas with synthomycin ointment.

  • Acute otitis media. The most frequent phenomenon in children. The causes of otitis media can be very many: peculiarities of the structure of the ear in children, inflammation due to difficulty in breathing through the nose, complications after SARS and influenza, foreign body entry in the ears.

The instruction to the drug prescribes the use of Suprax by children from 6 to 12 months in a dosage of 2.5-4 ml per day, 2-4 years - 5 ml, 5-11 years - from 6 to 10 ml per day, over 12 years, Supraks is appointed at the rate of 8 mgkg of weight.

Cefuroxime can be administered intravenously and taken orally. At intravenous introduction the dosage is calculated by the doctor at the rate of 30-100 mg per kg of body weight. Injections are administered 3-4 times a day.

Children up to 3 months are shown not more than 30 mgkg per day in 2-3 doses. The tablet form of the drug is used after a meal twice a day, 125-250 mg, in the form of a suspension, up to 1000 mg can be taken. The course is designed for 5-10 days.

Cefazolin, as well as other cephalosporins, is calculated by the physician based on the body weight of the baby. The medication is prescribed in severe forms of otitis media and only in injections that are administered as intramuscularly or intravenously.

The dosage is 40 mg / kg body weight the kid. Rarely, but it is permitted to increase the dosage to 100 mgkgkg of weight. Cefazolin, as a rule, is administered four times and treated for at least 10 days.
