Specific prevention of influenza and antiviral treatment
More than 500 viruses that cause a variety of diseases have been discovered and investigated to date. About 100 viruses lead to diseases of the respiratory system.
For the prevention of influenza are used:
- Virus-specific drugs;
- Specific vaccines;
- Interferons and their inducers, suppressing the development of viruses in the body.
In the treatment and prevention of symptomatic therapy and means of pathogenetic treatment. In this case, virus-specific drugs and immunotropic drugs are not very widely used.
All viruses that cause respiratory pathology are very common, variable and polymorphic. In Russia, about 35 million people are registered for a year with acute respiratory viral infections.
In the event of outbreaks of viral diseases, about 10% of the population may be struck simultaneously or in a short time. Mortality from influenza during epidemic upsurge is at the level of 870 cases per 100 thousand population.
The World Health Organization believes that a pandemic can arise in connection with the formation of a completely new influenza A virus, to which people do not have immunity. In previous pandemics, 20 to 40% of the population was infected. Deaths in these periods were recorded about 20 million.
