A newborn or little baby sleeps: an occasion for joy or anxiety?
A calm little chap who sleeps for a long time and does not bother his parents, is perceived by many mothers and dads as a gift of fate. However, in fact, this can be completely wrong: if the baby is sleeping for a long time, then he does not eat much, and this leads to serious pathologies of development of a little man. So, why the baby can sleep for a long time and not wake up, what to do in order to improve the situation – these issues need to be dealt with in detail.
The average number of hours of sleep for a newborn is 18-20 hours. In this case, the baby should eat every hour and a half, as for one feed he eats very little, in addition, breast milk is very quickly and well digested. So a dream without waking up for 4, 5, 6 or more hours should alert the parents.
It is interesting. The stomach volume of the newborn is about 7 ml.
If a child misses a meal (and it does not matter: it’s breast milk or a mixture with artificial feeding), then he misses the elements necessary for development, and therefore becomes weaker and sleeps even more. It turns out a vicious circle. From 1-1.5 months, the baby begins to sleep a little less in the afternoon, breaks between feedings at night increase to 5-6 hours. Gradually, the night sleep becomes more integral, that is, the child sleeps longer without interruption. So deviation from the norm is easier to observe by the duration of a day’s sleep.
True, sleep rates for newborns and infants are approximate. Let us dwell on the factors that can affect the duration of sleep.
