Child car seat: safety, crash test, quality standard
In the car, the safety of passengers is in the first place, for this reason the use of special devices for the transportation of children is legislatively fixed. Regular belts are not suitable because of the size and anatomy, it is dangerous to carry a baby on the knees for both passengers, and a baby car seat is an ideal option combining convenience and minimizing risks. Products offered by manufacturers differ in age and weight categories of children, each product undergoes crash tests, which is necessary to determine safety and endurance parameters.
Crash test – English. crash test – literally translated as an emergency test. In the case of children’s car seats, this is the so-called safety check when simulating accidents with the use of dummies.
Each company conducts minimum tests of its products, but some international manufacturers send novelties to independent laboratories:
To date, there are two standards for crash testing in Europe:
- ECE-R 44/04, updated in 2009;
- ECE-R 44/03, applicable until 2009.
Large enterprises are guided by the updated version, because it is more secure and covers a wider range of tests. So, in the new standard, the speed for the frontal impact is increased from 36 km / h to 50 km / h, the rules of testing and the methods used, the evaluation criteria are listed. The requirements of this standard are rigid, take into account the speed of the possible backlash on the seat, the width of the belts, diving under them, excluding visible metal parts from the structure that contact the body of the child. Devices that have passed the standardization of security are marked with an emblem.
