What to do if a child gnaws nails
Like many adults, children also suffer from bad habits. The most common habit among children is the merciless nibbling of nails. At first glance, there is nothing lethal in this habit, but when it is discovered, the necessary measures must be taken immediately.
The habit of constantly and actively gnawing nails today is such a common phenomenon that it even found its place in the list of scientific terms. This habit is called – onyphagia;
Doctors have observed and found out that about 30% of children from 6 to 10 years old suffer from it. Boys are more prone to this habit than girls. At the age of 10 to 17 years, the percentage of children gnawing nails increases to 50%. This is exactly the age when frequent changes occur in life, relationships with parents and friends are far from ideal, the load in school increases. But this habit arises also because of a number of other reasons, which we will consider below.
The desire to chew nails appears with stress and neuroses. The causes of stress can be disagreements with parents and peers, increased mental stress, lack of sleep or banal dissatisfaction with themselves. Neuroses can occur due to diseases of the cardiovascular system or from a lack of vitamins E, B and magnesium.
The child is prone to imitate everything that he sees. Perhaps someone from close acquaintances or relatives also suffers from this harmful habit.
The child grew and you first weaned it from the chest, then from the nipple. But the nipple was an alternative – a finger. The habit of early childhood to suck a finger, turned into a habit to gnaw nails (how to disaccustom to sucking fingers).
The untimely cutting of the nails to the child can also be the cause. If the nail plates are weak, then they grow quite a bit, they begin to break down and separate. To the child it starts to cause inconvenience. Then he takes his own measures, he bites them.
If the child is denied many pleasures, for example, to forbid eating sweet, then he will try to replace it by nibbling the nail. This occupation has a calming effect on it and distracts from an annoying feeling. In the same way, your child can save himself from boredom. So make sure that he does not hang around idle. Find him an interesting and useful lesson.
Do not let your child sit too long behind a TV and computer. Not all television programs are good for the child, not all computer games are useful. The child absorbs all the negative, which flows from the media stream. Modern computer games are stuffed with cruel scenes of struggle. Choose cartoons (some rules for watching children’s cartoons), programs and games that would have a positive and creative effect on the child’s psyche.
