What we used to call a “cold” is actually called an acute respiratory infection, abbreviated ARVI. This concept unites a whole group of diseases, they are most often caused by viruses.
Among the evils that visit babies of the first two years of life, viral infections make up a very significant part (according to statistics, about 50%). Although newborns and babies have every chance of not falling into this category. Nature has taken care to protect them from the onslaught of harmful microorganisms, “having thought over” the composition of breast milk.
Let’s see how this mechanism works.
- The immune system of a newborn is only developing, so it cannot yet fulfill its protective role. For example, in the body of babies, the required immunoglobulin A is not produced, whose task is to “meet” and destroy the malicious aggressors at the entrance: on the mucous membranes of the nose, mouth and throat. Nature has compensated for its deficiency in infants during the first months of life by enriching breast milk with secretory immunoglobulin A.
- In addition, my mother’s milk contains other important components of the defense system, such as white blood cells, which produce interferon, which destroys viruses; Lysozyme is a substance with natural antibiotic properties.
Everyone knows that hardening strengthens the immune system, so do not be afraid that the cool air and water will harm the baby. On the contrary, their influence trains the skin vessels – this process is provided by nature to prepare the newborn for independent life.
Judge for yourself. All nine months before birth, the child lives in the mother’s stomach at 37 ° C. Having appeared on the world, it falls on Wednesday, where this indicator is equal to 22 ° С.
A drop of 17–18 ° C is very important for the health of the newborn: in response, the skin receptors transmit a signal to the muscles, their tone rises, and the baby’s body temperature rises to 37–38 ° C. Thus, the effect of cold causes the muscles to contract, as a result, his body begins to produce more heat.
At the same time, the capillaries of the skin “learn” to respond correctly to changes in temperature around them – they contract, reducing heat transfer.
Hardening babies should be gradually, lowering the water temperature by 0.5 ° C 1 time in 2 weeks. The child determines the procedure time himself: as soon as he starts crying, it should be stopped. In addition to bathing, it is worth using other methods of hardening.
For example, you can wash your face and hands with cold water, “grabbing” the neck, elbows, giving him air baths, and massaging.
The more time a child spends in the air, the less often he will be sick, because, firstly, the air “trains” the skin, secondly, the concentration of pathogens in a confined space is much more than in the open, and, thirdly, fresh air is “rich” in negatively charged ions (in other words, ozone), and they are very useful for the human body.
