“The birth of a child always leaves an imprint on the woman’s body, primarily on the organs that are directly involved in this process. And, of course, this circumstance cannot but affect the following genera, and therefore for women expecting their first child, and for experienced mothers, they proceed in different ways.
The first difference is the duration of labor. If the birth of the first baby usually takes a total of 11-12 hours, then the second or third child will be born much faster, in 8-9 hours. That’s because in the latter case, the internal organs of the woman are already “trained” and prepared for childbirth.
For example, the cervix of moms “with experience” is softer, more elastic and stretches more easily. By the end of pregnancy, it opens slightly and by the beginning of the birth itself has time to open more than 2 cm, while in the “debutantes” the discovery is much slower.
In their early stages of labor, the cervix is first shortened and only then revealed, whereas in experienced moms these processes occur simultaneously and take less time.
With repeated deliveries, not only their first stage, when the cervix is opened, passes faster, but the second stage – the period of attempts. For example, if at the time of the birth of the first child, the attempts and exit of the baby take 1–2 hours, then experienced mothers sometimes cope in 20–60 minutes.
Contractions occur more often, last longer, with greater force; we can say that childbirth is “more energetic.”
How will the birth of the second baby, largely depends on what were the first birth.
At the same time, in the unhurried pace that accompanies the first birth, there is a special meaning, because thanks to this the woman gets time to gradually adapt to this very “extreme” situation and slowly to engage in her responsible work. But the speed with which the second childbirth can take place, sometimes causes surprise and confusion in future mothers.
To begin with, women who are preparing to become mothers for the second time do not always notice the onset of labor. For example, one of the signals for this is the exit of a mucous plug that closes access to the cervix, for women waiting for their first child, usually occurs a few days before delivery, and for experienced mothers the plug can go away with the onset of regular contractions. Often women think that they have a few more hours left, and the contractions suddenly intensify so much that the baby is about to be born.
By the way, this is why unexpected births at home or in a car on the way to the maternity hospital are more often the second or third women for women.
The rapid pace and dynamism of repeated deliveries are not the only differences from the first. Developments can disrupt the complications of a previous pregnancy or the birth of a baby.
For example, at the final stage, the exit of the placenta may be delayed, and the doctor will have to separate it manually. That is why doctors always ask patients in detail about how their previous births went. Knowing about the past difficulties, they will carefully monitor the woman during pregnancy to try to prevent possible consequences.
Doctors especially closely monitor the condition of mothers who are expecting a second child after the first cesarean section – in this case it is very important to monitor the condition of the uterine scar. ”
“Previously, women who came to the maternity hospital for the first time, most often, could be“ calculated ”immediately: first, by a younger age, and second, by a frightened and confused look. Now the first birth after thirty is not uncommon, and future mothers have become much more prepared and confident.
Nevertheless, the difference between inexperienced and experienced mothers, of course, is.
Women who have already gone through the birth of a child know how to behave, what to do, how to breathe, and when to push; they have better body control. However, during repeated births, a mother can get a lot of “surprises” from her body, because they pass faster, more actively and, alas, more painfully.
Without anesthesia, it is not easy to cope with these sensations, but if a woman has epidural anesthesia done on time and correctly, she may even be surprised how quickly and easily her baby will be born.
We talked about the fact that mothers “with experience” remember well how to behave during childbirth, but this happens only when the interval between the birth of children is not very long. If the difference between the older and the youngest child is 10 years old, you will have to remember it all over again, so even experienced mothers should not neglect visits to the antenatal clinic.
Moreover, sometimes it is just in anticipation of younger children that women need to be especially attentive to themselves, because large babies are born more often (and this always makes childbirth difficult), and age-related changes can already make themselves known.
If the birth of the first child went smoothly, it does not mean that during the second pregnancy you can “loosen vigilance”, go to the doctor less often and not prepare for childbirth.
What else should be ready to “twice moms”? To the fact that after delivery the milk will come a little faster: not on the 3rd – 5th day, as for the first time, but on the 2nd – 3rd day.
If a woman breastfeeds her first child and her lactiferous ducts are well developed, she will be able to avoid difficulties with feeding, which are often in inexperienced moms, because milk will go easier. But it must be borne in mind that during the feeding of the second baby, discomfort may appear for another reason. The fact is that the restoration of the uterus after the second and third genera is more difficult, because during the next pregnancy it becomes larger and more sensitive.
When a woman breastfeeds a child, the uterus contracts more and it causes pain. But in the maternity hospital, a young mother will be helped to cope with this and will prescribe painkillers.
Finally, I want to say a few words not only about mothers, but also about fathers, because in our center most women give birth with their husbands. Of course, the second birth of the pope is perceived much calmer and, I would say, more consciously than the first. It happens that at the time of the birth of the firstborn, the fathers hardly understand what is happening and how to behave.
Some people are so worried that they interfere with both their wife and doctors, and with the second child they can already react to the situation with more restraint. ”
Remembering how the first childbirth took place, women expect from the next complete repetition of events, but the development of the situation may be unexpected. So, in anticipation of the second baby, the expectant mother should not be delayed in collecting at the maternity hospital.
Doctors advise you to go there immediately, as soon as regular bouts begin.
