Scoliosis is the curvature of the spine to the right or left in the frontal plane. Most often there is a simple curvature with one bend in one direction or another. Complex curvature with several curves in different directions is a rare phenomenon.
Infantile scoliosis is usually associated with dystonia of the muscles. As soon as the baby’s muscle tone is normalized, the orthopedist makes a diagnosis.
The cause can also be complications during pregnancy and childbirth, calcium deficiency, vitamin D and vitamin B, hereditary predisposition, lack of physical activity of the baby.
At the initial stage, it is not easy to identify scoliosis, because the baby does not feel any discomfort. But parents can still notice something wrong. If the child is not standing alone, any asymmetry of folds on the body and limbs requires consultation with an orthopedic surgeon or a neurologist.
If the baby can already stand, do a simple home test. Strip the baby, turn your back to him and ask him to stand up straight: heels should be joined together, arms extended along the body. The line of the spine from the neck to the tailbone should be straight, the seventh cervical vertebra and tailbone should be on one strictly vertical line, and the left and right ear, left and right shoulder girdle, left and right scapula – at the same level.
The blades must be symmetrical and equally convex. Ask the child to lie down on the belly.
If the curvature has disappeared, then, most likely, it is not scoliosis, but a violation of posture.
Physical Education and Massage
In the initial stage, scoliosis is not dangerous. If you go to a doctor in time, the development of the disease can be easily prevented. Otherwise, the vertebrae will continue to shift, which can lead to muscle asymmetry, pinching of the nerve endings that are located near the spine.
Headaches, pains in the back, chest and lower back, malfunctions of the internal organs begin.
As a treatment, physiotherapy, massage, physiotherapy are usually prescribed, which help to restore the correct position of the vertebrae and strengthen the back muscles. In rare cases, with a strong curvature may appoint wearing a corset.
Usually improvements come literally in 2−3 months. In the future, the treatment should be periodically repeated, and corrective gymnastics will have to be done constantly.
Natural curves of the spine are formed in stages. First, a bend forms in the neck (cervical lordosis). For everything to go right, the child must sleep without a pillow before the year.
Later you can buy it, but it should be flat and small – reach a maximum to the shoulders. The baby should sleep on a firm, dense, but elastic mattress so that the spine does not bend during sleep.
When the child begins to sit, 2 more bends are formed: in the thoracic and lumbar regions (kyphosis and lumbar lordosis). It is important to wait for the crumb to sit on its own, keeping your back upright; it is not necessary to plant it ahead of time, otherwise a thoracolumbar kyphosis can form – the so-called “round back”.
