Now the body spends calcium and other minerals on the needs of the child, and the level of this element in the composition of the oral fluid is reduced. Due to a lack of calcium, and even an excess of carbohydrates from food, the remains of which are converted into acid, caries appears and quickly develops, the teeth become sensitive and fragile.
Subsequent hormonal changes in the body of the future mother reduces the blood supply to the gums, increasing the risk of inflammation, and thoughtless care and lack of vitamins increase this likelihood. The situation is exacerbated if the woman is often worried about vomiting: because of her, the pH in the mouth shifts further to the acidic side, reducing the protective properties of the oral fluid, from which the teeth and gums suffer.
That is why it is better to prepare them for the test of pregnancy even before its onset, to clean and cure them from a specialist. Then, already waiting for the baby, the help of the dentist will be needed to remove dental deposits, cover the teeth with a composition that strengthens the enamel, and heal a small caries if it does appear again.
But the accumulated problems must be treated without waiting for the end of the pregnancy, and in no case can one refuse the services of a dentist at this time. It is believed that in anticipation of a child, this occupation is unsafe.
Of course, dentists have special rules for treating expectant mothers: the doctor uses only benign painkillers (if possible without adrenaline), pictures are taken using a safe radiovisiograph, not X-rays, and so on. But, most surprisingly, the main obstacle to treatment is the patient’s own experiences. Expectant mothers need to avoid nerve shocks, and dentistry for many of us is associated with stress.
Adjust yourself calmly, then the visit to the doctor will pass without pain and tension, only with the benefit for you and the baby.
Yet the main work on the protection of teeth and gums is not done in a medical office, but outside of it, moreover, day after day. And it depends on our efforts!
Toothbrush. You can buy both ordinary and electric or ultrasonic. An ordinary brush should have multilevel bristles, rubber inserts, a scarp on the tip.
Choose a medium hard brush if your dentist does not recommend another one. Their price corresponds to the quality of workmanship.
If you decide to buy an electric brush, choose a model with interchangeable nozzles and a round head that can perform reciprocating circular motions. A useful addition would be an irrigator to remove food debris from the interdental spaces and massage the gums.
By the way, mouth rinsing can be added to the irrigator tank.
Toothpaste. It is better if you alternate several items: with fluorine, calcium, to strengthen the gums, and possibly also to reduce the sensitivity of the teeth.
Gels, solutions, rinses with fluorine or calcium.
Discuss with your doctor whether you need to use one of these products to strengthen the enamel.
Dental floss and toothpicks. You need to brush your teeth 2 times a day, without noticing time, but counting how many times you brush over different surfaces of the tooth (at least 10 movements).
The correct cleaning technique will not only relieve you of plaque, but also protect your teeth from abrasion due to incorrect movements, excessive efforts and too long cleaning (sometimes it happens!).
If the gums start to bleed, only the doctor can determine the cause of these events and prescribe the correct treatment. You do not need to change the brush to a soft one with your own solution, it will clear worse, and the plaque remaining after its work will increase inflammation and bleeding.
Then the process of completely treatable gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) can turn into periodontitis (inflammation of the surrounding tooth tissues), which is more difficult to cope with.
Remember: monitor the condition of the teeth and gums is necessary not only for their well-being, but also for the health of the child. Caries, pulpitis, periodontitis, gingivitis, periodontitis – the basis of these problems is infection, which is a source of toxins and can cause an attack of pain, and hence stress on the expectant mother.
