Nonprofessionals are allowed to practice only tonic massage, especially if it is intended for a small child. To gain self-confidence, you can invite a specialist at home and learn key techniques in a few sessions. Home performance differs from a professional massage primarily by the effect of the muscles and the set of movements used. So, it is better for mom to limit herself to the stimulation of superficial muscles, because a lot of experience is required to work through the deep layers.
With regard to therapeutic massage, it should be carried out only by a highly qualified specialist, and only upon doctor’s prescription.
You can start the sessions from the first days after discharge from the hospital, but it is better to wait at least 1-2 weeks. Contraindications to preventive massage can be congenital sprains or subluxations, hernias.
If the baby has a fever or a rash, the massage will have to be temporarily abandoned. When diaper rash appears, it is not necessary to cancel the session, just do not touch the affected skin.
Before starting the procedure, make sure that the crumb is in the mood. If he is naughty, better wait for a more appropriate moment.
Be prepared for the fact that any child may not like any tricks right away. So that he would quickly become accustomed to useful manipulations and not resist them, inform him about the beginning of the session and comment out loud on your actions.
During the massage, put on soft, rhythmic music, smile, sing a tiny song and be sure to maintain eye contact with him – so he will feel more confident and relax better.
Crumb massage should be done 1 time per day 40–60 minutes after feeding. A hungry child will show discontent and will persistently demand food.
When the baby is 3 months old, the interval between feeding and the session can be reduced. The optimal time is the first half of the day, when the infant is most active.
Creams and powders are optional; they are needed for a professional massage to reduce friction. The first sessions usually last 5−10 minutes, and when the baby grows up, the pleasure can be stretched to 30−40 minutes.
The first classes are recommended to start with simple gentle touches. Stroking baby should be careful, palms or back of hands.
Should move in the direction of the lymph flow, that is, from the foot to the groin and from the hands to the armpits. Particular attention should be paid to the palms and each finger, because in the first stage they are constantly compressed into cams.
Massaging your back, exclude the spine, start with the shoulders and go down to the waist. At the very end, work the feet and legs, moving up and down from the buttocks to the shins and back.
Each movement is repeated 3-4 times.
If the baby develops normally, from 3 months massage is supplemented with elements of gymnastics, but they can be entered only after consulting a doctor. Rubbing movements are added to strokes. They are performed with their fingertips, moving from the feet to the stomach.
In this case, the fingers should not slide on the skin, and slightly move it. From this age, it is allowed to stroke the baby’s tummy clockwise. From half a year it is possible to “knead” the back with light tweaks.
Closer to 9 months it is worth trying a new technique: with the edge of the palm, lightly and gently, “cutting” the back, without touching the lumbar region and the spine, and then the buttocks with an up and down sliding motion.
