Normally, a person’s foot rests on three points: the heel, the area near the little finger, and the area under the big toe. Between themselves, these areas are fastened with ligaments, muscles and tendons. All this construction forms two arches of the foot – longitudinal and transverse, which when walking perform the function of shock absorbers.
If one of these arches is not formed, they say about flatfoot. But since the foot is formed from 3 to 8 years, such a diagnosis can finally be made to children after 8 years, but it is necessary to notice violations in the formation of the arch of the foot much earlier. Particular attention should be paid to this circumstance if a child at an early age suffered rickets.
Indeed, quite often flatfoot after rickets occurs as a long-term consequence of this disease. Since in the second half of the life of the baby the load on the foot increases, rickets can affect the incorrect formation of the arch of the foot.
Parents should show the child to a pediatrician or surgeon if:
- 2-3 year old child gets very tired when walking;
- the baby complains of pain in the foot or calf muscles, and by the evening the pain increases, and after resting passes;
- the child gets very tired when he stands;
- the child’s ankles and lower legs swell;
- it is difficult for a baby to find comfortable shoes;
- heels of shoes are installed on the inside.
In order not to get lost in conjectures, whether the crumbs of flat feet or not and whether the arch of the foot is correctly formed, all that’s necessary is not to skip prophylactic examinations with the orthopedist. In the first year of life, they take place at 1.3, 6, 9, and 12 months, then, depending on the condition of the child, every six months or once a year. The orthopedist will carefully examine the child and, if he suspects the violation, he will carry out special tests and examine the baby on a special device, the podoscope.
This device allows you to get an image of foot prints on a flat surface. After analyzing them, the doctor will make a diagnosis.
Since flat feet due to have arisen, flat feet and rickets will work along with it. To get rid of rickets prescribe therapeutic doses of vitamin D, adjust the mode of the day and diet, as well as prescribed physical therapy.
Since flat feet are weak muscles and ligaments that do not hold the arch of the foot, charging will be the main treatment for flat feet. You must regularly perform exercises to strengthen the muscles of the foot.
A foot massage is also possible as a treatment. But, as doctors admit, you should not expect much effect from it.
With flat feet, an orthopedic insole may also be needed to create the correct load on the foot. It is also recommended to walk barefoot on uneven surfaces: on grass, on pebbles near water, etc., and at home – on an orthopedic mat.
