It all depends on what kind of infection caused the future mother’s illness and what the patient’s condition is. Most often, obstetricians are faced with acute respiratory infections, food toxicoinfections (food poisoning) and exacerbation of pyelonephritis (inflammation of the kidneys).
Usually women in the midst of an infectious disease sent to natural childbirth. With a cesarean section, the situation is more complicated – the recovery period after surgery may be complicated, healing will be worse.
The first thing to do when you feel unwell is to call your obstetrician-gynecologist. He will decide what to do next.
Perhaps the expectant mother will need to consult a doctor of another specialty, such as an infectiologist. But for a start, the doctor will determine whether it is an infection or a more serious surgical problem (appendicitis, acute pancreatitis, intestinal obstruction), the manifestations of which are similar.
An expectant mother will definitely have an ultrasound scan (it will show whether the placenta is coping with the role of a barrier in the way of infection to the baby, the amount of amniotic fluid, the change in the level of which is a sign of infection), dopplerometry (measurement of blood flow in the vessels of the placenta, uterus, and also the baby) and cardiac monitoring to understand how he feels.
Does infection affect childbirth?
Often not, although they can go faster due to high temperatures. On the development of events affects the overall condition of the woman.
If she has severe dehydration and intoxication (the accumulation of toxic substances in the blood – the result of life and death of microbes), the baby’s well-being will deteriorate, and such birth will need to be done very carefully so as not to harm it.
Does the future mother have an infection during childbirth?
Doctors relieve symptoms of the disease: they reduce the temperature, give antibiotics that are allowed for use during pregnancy. After the birth of the baby, these appointments are preserved.
For example, with ARD, antibiotics help prevent the appearance, following a viral, also of a bacterial infection, which is fraught with problems in conditions where the uterus of a young mother is so vulnerable to any infection.
After the birth of the baby, he is not always left with his mother – it all depends on the rules of the maternity hospital. In our center, this is possible if the condition of a woman allows her to care for a child. As for breastfeeding, in most cases it is permitted even during the illness of a young mother.
With only one condition – wear a mask.
Alas and oh! During pregnancy, immunity is inevitably reduced in women, because otherwise their body would have to reject the baby, who is only half the carrier of my mother’s genetic material. As you understand, this situation is beneficial to unsafe microbes.
Therefore, being “in position”, we become more vulnerable for any infections. First of all – acute respiratory infections.
And a few more words about the rules. We accept the patients attached to our center, even if they have signs of an infectious disease. But for urban maternity hospitals there is an order, according to which a woman with high fever, signs of an infectious disease, in a condition requiring urgent hospitalization, is sent to the maternity ward of the infectious hospital.
To give birth to women with acute infectious disease usually do not allow relatives. But in our center, if the father (or another family member) is healthy, we allow his presence.
