To decide on the purchase of a breast pump before the birth of a child does not make sense. First, you may not need it (for example, if you feed a small “on demand” and are almost inseparable from it). Secondly, for many young mothers, the usual way of decanting seems more natural than any other, even the most modern.
And, finally, you can choose the model that is right for you only after you have gained some experience of breastfeeding and understand what is needed specifically in your case. Obviously, a breast pump can help a young mother in different situations. In the first days after giving birth, it will help those who have too much milk, and it is painful to “strain out” the chest with his hands.
Others will need it if after feedings it is necessary to decant the surplus, and someone will come in handy when it is necessary to immediately go to work.
- A progressive electrical model that operates on both the mains and the batteries. Such a breast pump is characterized by high performance, besides it frees the hands. What can confuse you is that during work it creates a lot of noise.
- Another popular model is a physiological breast pump, imitating the process of breast sucking through a silicone massager surrounding the areola, and a special diaphragm – thanks to it, milk is decanted easily and silently. In addition, the device has a special valve with which you can adjust the intensity of the process. But the most pleasant thing is that the handle structure facilitates the work and does not allow the hand to get tired.
- The vacuum piston breast pump resembles a large syringe. He copes well with the task, but, working with him, the young mother has to act with both hands.
- And finally, the simplest model of the breast pump – a pump with a rubber bulb. Compared to modern models, it does not work as effectively and does not have an integrated milk tank.
Many manufacturers supplement breast pumps with useful accessories. Most models are transformed into a bottle from which you can feed your baby, or into a container for storing milk.
Special brushes help keep the details of the breastpumps clean, and in the kits for working mothers there are cooling packages in which the milk will stay fresh for a long time. It’s nice that some accessories to the devices can be purchased separately.
Remember that even if you choose the most effective and physiological model of the breast pump, young mothers do not always manage to avoid the problems associated with the pumping process. If you are unable to start (it usually happens because of the so-called “tight chest”), try a chest massage or take a warm shower. In addition, the breast pump will not be able to express the milk to the last drop: most likely, you will have to do it by hand.
And, of course, do not forget that after each (!) Use, the device must be thoroughly cleaned, and some parts even sterilized.
