The warm sun, long walks, swimming in the sea, jogging on the grass – in the summer nature gives us many opportunities to improve the health of the baby and prepare it for the cold season. Is it possible to harden a child in autumn and winter?
Doctors are convinced: rain and frost is not a hindrance.
With the first hardening procedures, the newborn baby is already facing the maternity hospital, when during a diaper change for a couple of minutes is left without clothes and his body is exposed to room air. For 2–3 weeks, the child doesn’t need any other hardening, because his body already does a difficult job – it adapts to the new environment.
At this time, the main thing that is required of the parents is to create the right atmosphere for the baby. The apartment should be fresh and cool: in the first months of life, the optimum temperature for babies is 22 ° C, and after 6 months – 19–20 ° C.
The newborn’s body needs 2.5 times more oxygen than an adult, so make sure that there is good air circulation in its sleeping corner, air the apartment 4–5 times a day for at least 10–15 minutes and do not forget about walks – they have a powerful tempering effect.
Hold classes only when the baby feels good. Before the procedure, the skin of the child should be warm; if his hands and feet are cold, first warm them.
Do not arrange air baths or rubdowns before bedtime – they invigorate babies. Hardening classes should not follow each other without a break: for example, spend air baths during the day and in the evening, and wiping – in the morning. Ensure that beneficial procedures take place regularly throughout the year.
If for some reason you have interrupted classes, start again from the very first “indicators”, but move forward faster than before. Hardening should be fun for the kid; if the baby doesn’t like it, don’t insist.

Changing a diaper can be turned into a healthy procedure, if you briefly leave your baby naked. This simple technique has a good hardening effect, because the air temperature is significantly lower than body temperature. Thanks to the air baths, the baby’s body receives more oxygen, because it penetrates not only through the lungs, but also through the skin. “Having breathed,” the baby will eat with gusto and sleep better.
Perform procedures 2-3 times a day; Start from 2–3 minutes and gradually increase the duration to 15 minutes if the baby is not yet 6 months old and up to 30 minutes after 6 months. At this time, you can do a crumbling light massage or arrange a gymnastics class.
After 1-2 weeks after the start of the air baths, the child can be gradually prepared for hardening with water. First, for 1.5-2 weeks, rub the child’s skin twice a day with a dry, soft mitten until it turns pink.
After the baby has become accustomed to dry wiping, go to wet. It is best to arrange them in the morning.
Dampen a soft terry towel with warm water and wipe the baby’s palms, then rise to the shoulders, from the feet go to the thighs, then breast, stomach, and lastly – your back. Cover those parts of the body that are not involved in the process with a blanket.
Ensure that the procedure lasts no longer than 1-2 minutes. Gradually reduce the temperature of the water into which the towel is dipped, from 37 ° C to 33–34 ° C by 6 months (according to the same scheme, the temperature of the water in the bath can be reduced while bathing).
And do not forget to warm the little one after the lesson is over.
