Bandages belong to the category of underwear, which, depending on the destination, is worn during pregnancy or after childbirth, that is, there are prenatal and postnatal bandages. There are also universal models that are suitable for wearing in both periods.
In addition, bandages vary in form:
Bandage-panties with elastic support insert in the front, over the stomach: worn as pants, but uncomfortable with the fact that daily wearing is impossible or difficult, because such a bandage must be washed every day.
The bandage belt is put on underwear. It has the appearance of an elastic band that supports the stomach and prevents the appearance of stretch marks.
Very convenient to use, special valves on the sides allow you to adjust the size and tightness of the fit.
Combined bandage is used both before and after childbirth. It is also made in the form of a belt – from rubberized fabric that stretches.
Such a bandage with velcro is fastened: during pregnancy a wide part strengthens the back, and a narrow one supports the stomach. After childbirth, the belt is fastened in the opposite way: narrowly back, and a wide one at this time tightens the abdomen.
As soon as the future mom’s tummy begins to grow rapidly, it’s time to think about wearing a bandage. This usually happens from the fourth month — on the 20–24th week.
But in some cases, wearing a bandage is advisable a little earlier or, on the contrary, later. This is especially true for women who are active and who spend several hours on end.
The bandage will help you to reduce the pain caused by the pressure of the fetus on the tailbone and pelvic bones, as well as relieve the spine.
If your abdominal muscles are weakened, you can’t do without a bandage. He will support the child, performing the function of strong abdominal muscles. The weakening of the abdominal cavity is more likely during repeated or multiple pregnancy.
In addition, the bandage is necessary when the appearance of stretch marks or a predisposition to it. Also wearing a bandage is indicated for osteochondrosis, varicose veins, for some types of obstetric pathologies and for the threat of premature birth.
In order not to be mistaken with the size of the bandage, contact a specialist store or pharmacy consultant for help. If you still prefer to do on your own, keep in mind that the size of bandages-belts corresponds to your size before pregnancy: S (42–44), M (46–48), L (50–52), XL (52–54 ), ХХL (56 and higher), and in order to find out the size of the bandage-pants, one more size should be added to the “pre-pregnancy” size. It is best to try on several options and focus on the one in which you feel most comfortable.
The universal (combined) bandage is selected as follows: measure the abdominal circumference at the navel with a centimeter tape and add 4–5 cm to the resulting figure in uterus growth in the next weeks of pregnancy – this figure will be the size of the bandage. Be sure to try on the bandage, wearing it over your underwear.
If, putting on a bandage, you feel comfortable in it, it means that the bandage is chosen correctly. Sometimes you have to re-measure several models to decide which one to choose.
You must wear a bandage lying on your back, slightly lifting the hips. When a woman stands, the uterus descends under its own weight, and, fixing it in this position, we will only aggravate the problems that the bandage is designed to fight.
Removing the bandage is also more comfortable lying down. The bandage should not exert excessive pressure.
The fact that the bandage is sitting somehow wrong, will tell an elementary feeling of discomfort. However, it is often necessary to get used to new sensations during the first 2–3 days, only after that the stay in the bandage will become more comfortable.
